Kenley Geronimo Jansen is a Curaçaoan professional baseball pitcher for the Detroit Tigers of Major League Baseball (MLB). He has previously played in MLB for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Atlanta Braves, Boston Red Sox, and Los Angeles Angels. He has also represented the Netherlands national baseball team in international competition.
Jansen is a four-time MLB All-Star and a two-time National League Reliever of the Year. He helped the Los Angeles Dodgers win the 2020 World Series and has ranked among the all-time leaders in career saves, joining the 400-save club in 2023 and the 450-save club in 2025.
Early Life and Background
Kenley Jansen was born on September 30, 1987, in Willemstad, Curaçao. He is the youngest of three sons of Isidor and Bernadette Jansen. His father worked in construction before suffering a stroke when Kenley was twelve, and his mother worked as a travel agent. Jansen began playing baseball at the age of six alongside his older brothers, and the local baseball culture of Curaçao shaped his early love for the game.
Jansen grew up as an Atlanta Braves fan because Braves games were broadcast in Curaçao on TBS. The team also signed fellow Curaçaoan Andruw Jones and Jansen’s older brother Ardley. Jansen started as an outfielder, then moved to shortstop before shifting to third base alongside Andrelton Simmons, and later playing first base and catcher.
Path to Baseball
Jansen was signed by the Los Angeles Dodgers as an undrafted free agent catcher on November 17, 2004. He spent several seasons in the Dodgers’ minor-league system, including stops with the Gulf Coast Dodgers, Ogden Raptors, Great Lakes Loons, and Inland Empire 66ers. In 2009, he served as the starting catcher for the Netherlands at the World Baseball Classic, where he threw out Willy Taveras in the ninth inning during the team’s upset of the Dominican Republic.
Despite his work behind the plate, the Dodgers convinced Jansen that he had no future as a catcher because of his offensive numbers, and encouraged him to switch to pitching. Under the guidance of former major leaguer Charlie Hough, Jansen began his conversion to pitcher in the second half of the 2009 season. He made the transition officially in the Arizona Fall League with the Peoria Javelinas and was added to the Dodgers’ 40-man roster on November 19, 2009.
