For his sophomore year, he transferred to Ravenscroft School in Raleigh, North Carolina, in part to be close to Marvin III, who was playing for Duke at the time. For his junior year, Marcus transferred again, this time to Sheldon High School in Sacramento, California, following Marvin III’s selection by the Sacramento Kings. He thrived at Sheldon, averaging 19.9 points and 7.9 rebounds per game and leading the team to the Open Division state title game. He shared The Sacramento Bee Player of the Year honors with teammate Justin Nguyen. His senior season was cut short by COVID-19 measures, and he played just 17 games, averaging 22 points and 8.8 rebounds per contest.

Marcus Bagley committed to Arizona State on July 29, 2019, choosing the Sun Devils over offers from California and Arizona. He arrived in Tempe with a reputation as a high-upside forward and quickly earned a role in the rotation.
