Early Life and Background
Michael Kenechukwu Petersen was born in London, England, to a white American father and a Nigerian mother. At the age of one, he moved to California, his father’s home state, and he grew up in San Jose. His multicultural upbringing and early transatlantic move shaped a versatile background before his baseball career formally began. The combination of an American father and a Nigerian mother later allowed him to represent Great Britain on the international stage. His childhood years in the Bay Area also connected him to the strong amateur baseball culture of Northern California.
Path to Professional Baseball

After one year at West Valley, Petersen transferred to Riverside City College, where he played one game in the 2014 season before being drafted by the San Francisco Giants in the 24th round of the 2014 MLB draft and once more choosing not to sign.
Finally, Petersen was drafted for a fourth time, by the Milwaukee Brewers, in the 17th round of the 2015 MLB draft. This time he signed, receiving a $100,000 bonus. That decision launched his professional career, after years of using the draft process to leverage his education and refine his skills.
