Nicholas Abruzzese, known professionally as Nick Abruzzese, is an American professional ice hockey player. A center by position, he plays for the Syracuse Crunch in the American Hockey League (AHL) while under contract to the Tampa Bay Lightning of the National Hockey League (NHL). Born and raised in New York, Abruzzese has built his career through a steady climb through junior, collegiate, and professional hockey.
Drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2019 following a breakout season in the United States Hockey League (USHL), Abruzzese went on to star at Harvard University before beginning his professional career. Early Career (2017–2019)
In 2017, Abruzzese joined the Chicago Steel of the United States Hockey League, one of the top junior leagues in North America. In his rookie season with the Steel, he recorded 13 goals and 36 points through 56 games, a solid start that nonetheless left him undrafted at the NHL level heading into his second year.
During the 2018–19 season, Abruzzese elevated his game under new head coach Greg Moore. He led the entire USHL in scoring with 80 points in 69 games, a performance that earned him a place on the 2018–19 All-USHL First Team. His breakout year also caught the attention of NHL scouts, and he was selected 124th overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft.
Harvard Crimson Era (2019–2022)
Following the draft, Abruzzese changed his collegiate commitment and enrolled at Harvard University, where he majored in psychology and played for the Harvard Crimson men’s ice hockey team beginning in the 2019–20 season. He recorded his first collegiate goal and added two assists on November 1, 2019, in a 7–3 win over Dartmouth. By December, his 16 points through 14 games led all NCAA freshmen in points per game at 1.14, earning him the ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Month Award.
His freshman year finished as the best under head coach Ted Donato, with 14 goals and 30 assists for 44 points in 31 games. Abruzzese was named ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Year and Ivy League Rookie of the Year, and he earned selections to the ECAC First All-Star Team, First Team All-Ivy, and the All-Rookie Team. Abruzzese ended his collegiate career by signing a two-year entry-level contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs on March 26, 2022. He made his NHL debut on April 4, 2022, against the Philadelphia Flyers, skating for nine minutes across 15 shifts. Later that month, on April 29, 2022, he scored his first NHL goal, a game-winner, against the Boston Bruins.
