During the 2011–12 season, Zadorov played for Krasnaya Armiya, the top minor hockey affiliate in his hometown, where he scored 6 points in 42 games. Showing unusual skating ability for his size, he was selected fourth overall by CSKA Moscow in the 2012 KHL Junior Draft. After an impressive performance with the Russian junior national U17 team in Windsor, Ontario, and a stated intention to pursue a North American career, he was chosen ninth overall by the London Knights in the 2012 CHL Import Draft.

He earned a spot in the 2013 CHL Top Prospects Game and helped the Knights win the OHL championship to reach the Memorial Cup. Nikita Zadorov Career
Early Career (2013–2015)
After his major junior season, Zadorov signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Buffalo Sabres on September 26, 2013. He made the Sabres’ opening-night roster and debuted on October 19, 2013, against the Colorado Avalanche. In just his second NHL game, he scored on his first shot against goaltender Chad Johnson of the Boston Bruins, becoming the youngest defenceman in Sabres history to score a goal.
He was returned to junior on November 19, 2013, but returned to make the Sabres’ roster full-time in 2014–15. That season he scored 3 goals and added 12 assists in 60 games while leading the Buffalo blueline in plus–minus. He also became the youngest Sabres defenceman to score an overtime winner, tallying against the Florida Panthers on December 13, 2014.
Buffalo Sabres to Colorado Avalanche (2015–2020)
On June 26, 2015, Zadorov was the central piece in a trade that sent him, Mikhail Grigorenko, J. T. Compher, and a draft pick to the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for Ryan O’Reilly and Jamie McGinn. He split time between the Avalanche and their AHL affiliate, the San Antonio Rampage, in 2015–16. By 2017–18, he had set new career highs with 7 goals, 13 assists, and 20 points while leading the NHL with 278 hits. On March 22, 2018, he set a franchise record with 15 hits in a single game.
After shoulder surgery in the summer of 2018, Zadorov returned to play 70 games in 2018–19. During the shortened 2019–20 campaign he suffered a fractured jaw from a puck to the face, but returned three games later and helped Colorado qualify for the 2020 Stanley Cup playoffs. He scored his first playoff goal in a 7–1 Game 5 win over the Arizona Coyotes and finished the postseason with 3 goals and 5 points in 15 games.
Chicago Blackhawks and Calgary Flames (2020–2023)
On October 10, 2020, Zadorov was traded to the Chicago Blackhawks alongside Anton Lindholm in exchange for Brandon Saad and Dennis Gilbert. In his lone season in Chicago he played 55 of 56 regular-season games, registering 1 goal and 8 points from the blueline as the Blackhawks missed the playoffs.
On July 28, 2021, his negotiation rights were traded to the Calgary Flames, and he signed a one-year, $3.75 million contract on August 20, 2021. On April 12, 2023, Zadorov recorded his first career NHL hat-trick in a 3–1 win over the San Jose Sharks. Following a loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs on November 10, 2023, it was reported that he had requested a trade.
Vancouver Canucks (2023–2024)
Zadorov’s trade request was granted on November 30, 2023, when he was dealt to the Vancouver Canucks for a 2024 fifth-round pick and a 2026 third-round pick. On March 13, 2024, he recorded a Gordie Howe hat trick in a 4–3 overtime loss to the Colorado Avalanche, earning an assist on a first-period Ilya Mikheyev goal before scoring and fighting Josh Manson within 37 seconds in the second period.
Boston Bruins Era (2024–Present)
After failing to reach an extension in Vancouver, Zadorov signed a six-year, $30 million contract with the Boston Bruins on July 1, 2024. He recorded his first points as a Bruin with two assists against the Montreal Canadiens in the second game of the season, and scored his first Boston goal on November 27, 2024, against the New York Islanders.
As injuries mounted for top defencemen Charlie McAvoy and Hampus Lindholm, Zadorov was elevated into a top-defenceman role on a Bruins team that slipped out of playoff contention. On March 23, 2025, after a 7–2 loss to the Los Angeles Kings, a remark he made following goaltender Jeremy Swayman’s fight attempt drew media attention, which he later clarified as frustration rather than a snub. He finished the 2024–25 season with 4 goals and 18 assists, tying his career high for points, while leading the NHL with 145 penalty minutes.
Driving Style and Strengths
Zadorov is widely regarded as a physical, shutdown defenceman who uses his 198 cm frame to deliver punishing hits and clear the front of the net. He led the NHL in hits in 2017–18 with 278 and again led the league in penalty minutes in 2024–25 with 145, underscoring his edge as an enforcer. While his offensive numbers are modest, his skating for his size and his willingness to log top-pairing minutes have made him a trusted defensive partner.
Notable Events and Milestones
Among Zadorov’s signature moments are his first NHL goal against the Boston Bruins in 2013, his franchise-record 15-hit game for Colorado in 2018, his first NHL hat-trick with Calgary in April 2023, and his Gordie Howe hat trick for Vancouver in March 2024. He also represented Russia at the 2019 IIHF World Championship in Bratislava, Slovakia.

Zadorov entered the 2024–25 season as a key addition to the Boston Bruins blue line on a six-year, $30 million deal. His first goal as a Bruin came on November 27, 2024, against the New York Islanders, and he continued to log heavy minutes alongside an increasingly depleted Boston group. By the trade deadline, the departures and injuries left him as the team’s clear number-one defenceman.
He closed the year with 4 goals and 18 assists, tying his previous career high for points, and led the entire NHL with 145 penalty minutes. With the Bruins missing the 2025 Stanley Cup playoffs, Zadorov’s 2025–26 outlook centers on serving as a veteran anchor for a retooling Boston defence.
