Sione Vaki Bio
Sione Vaki (born July 30, 2001) is an American professional football running back for the Detroit Lions of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the University of Utah Utes as a two-way player on both offense and defense. Vaki was selected by the Lions in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL draft and was named to the PFWA All-Rookie Team following his first professional season.
Early Life and Background
Sione Vaki was born on July 30, 2001, in Antioch, California, United States. He grew up in the East Bay area and attended Liberty High School in nearby Brentwood, California, where he developed into a versatile two-way athlete.
At Liberty High School, Vaki was used on both sides of the ball. On offense, he rushed for 401 yards and seven touchdowns, while also recording 107 receptions for 2,203 yards and 32 receiving touchdowns. On defense, he posted 142 tackles with one tackle for loss, five interceptions, four fumble recoveries, two forced fumbles, and two defensive touchdowns, and he also returned a kickoff for a score.
After high school, Vaki began a three-year mission trip for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He originally was assigned to serve in the Nuku’alofa, Tonga, Mission but was reassigned to the West Salt Lake City, Utah, Mission because of the COVID-19 pandemic. He later enrolled at the University of Utah to continue his football career.
