Tyre Phillips Bio
Tyre Jerel Phillips (born January 29, 1997) is an American professional football offensive tackle for the Cleveland Browns of the National Football League (NFL). Standing 6 feet 5 inches tall and weighing around 330 pounds, he plays across the offensive line and has appeared at both tackle and guard during his professional career. Phillips was selected by the Baltimore Ravens in the third round of the 2020 NFL draft and has since spent time with the New York Giants, Philadelphia Eagles, and Washington Commanders before joining Cleveland.
After beginning his college journey at East Mississippi Community College, Phillips transferred to Mississippi State, where he became a full-time starter on the offensive line. He has built his career on positional versatility, stepping in at multiple spots along the front when his teams have needed him.
Early Life and Background
Tyre Jerel Phillips was born on January 29, 1997, in Grenada, Mississippi, and grew up in the same small city in the north-central part of the state. He attended Grenada High School, where he was a multi-sport athlete during his teenage years. Although he played football as a freshman, Phillips stepped away from the gridiron to focus on basketball and marching band for a stretch of his high school career.
Encouraged by several people around him, Phillips returned to football late in his junior year at Grenada and quickly drew attention from college programs. He received scholarship offers from NCAA Division I Football Championship schools, programs that compete at the top tier of college football’s subdivision level. Looking for a path that would eventually allow him to reach the Division I Football Bowl Subdivision, Phillips opted instead for East Mississippi Community College.
Path to American Football
Phillips spent two seasons playing for the East Mississippi Community College Lions, using the junior college level to sharpen his technique and add the size that would later define his professional frame. His time at EMCC coincided with the program’s national spotlight, and Phillips used the stage to attract four-year offers. Between his two seasons with the Lions, he committed to Mississippi State and enrolled in January 2017, joining a Southeastern Conference program with a strong tradition of producing NFL offensive linemen.
At Mississippi State, Phillips redshirted his first year on campus, a decision he later described as the best thing he could have done for his development. He then worked into the Bulldogs’ offensive line rotation, playing at both tackle spots during his junior season. As a senior, he started all 13 games for Mississippi State and capped his college career with an invitation to the 2020 Senior Bowl, one of the premier showcase events for NFL draft prospects.
Tyre Phillips Career
Early Career (2020–2021)
Phillips was selected by the Baltimore Ravens with the 106th overall pick in the third round of the 2020 NFL draft, becoming one of three Mississippi State offensive linemen taken in that class. During his first training camp with the Ravens, the coaching staff moved him from tackle to offensive guard, and he beat out veteran D. J. Fluker for the starting job despite managing an ankle injury. His rookie season was interrupted when he was placed on injured reserve in early November 2020, though he returned to action later that month. In Week 15 against the Jacksonville Jaguars, Phillips recovered a fumble and returned it 22 yards, an unusual highlight for an offensive lineman.
His second NFL season began painfully, as Phillips was carted off the field with a knee injury during the 2021 opener against the Las Vegas Raiders. He was diagnosed with a torn ACL and placed on injured reserve the following day, missing most of the year before being activated in mid-October. Phillips finished the year on injured reserve again after a late-December placement, ending his sophomore campaign early. On August 31, 2022, Baltimore released him, opening the next chapter of his career.
New York Giants Breakthrough (2022–2024)
Phillips signed with the New York Giants on September 1, 2022, and spent time bouncing between the active roster and the practice squad through the fall. He was released in late August 2023, briefly re-signed to the practice squad, and let go again before catching on with the Philadelphia Eagles’ practice squad early in September 2023.
His most significant opportunity came on October 17, 2023, when the Giants signed him off the Eagles’ practice squad. With starting right tackle Evan Neal injured, Phillips was thrust into the starting lineup in Week 7 and started nine of the next ten games, proving he could handle a full-time role at the position. After a stint away from the roster, Phillips returned to the Giants’ practice squad on November 19, 2024, re-establishing himself as a dependable depth piece along the offensive front.
Washington Commanders and Cleveland Browns Era (2025–Present)
Phillips signed with the Washington Commanders on May 11, 2025, looking to compete for a roster spot along their offensive line. He was released by Washington on August 25, 2025, during the cut to the regular-season roster, but did not remain a free agent for long. On September 16, 2025, Phillips signed with the Cleveland Browns practice squad, joining a franchise that has long valued experienced trench players and continues to monitor his progress on the developmental unit.
Notable Events and Milestones
One of the most memorable moments of Phillips’ early career came in December 2020, when he scooped up a fumble and rumbled 22 yards against the Jacksonville Jaguars, an extremely rare play for an offensive lineman. His selection in the third round of the 2020 draft also marked a milestone, as he was part of a Mississippi State offensive line class that produced multiple NFL starters.
Tyre Phillips Family
Personal Life
Phillips was raised in Grenada, Mississippi, and continues to be identified with his hometown community. Public details about his immediate family, marital status, and children are not widely documented, and he has generally kept his personal life private away from the field.
2025 Season Performance
Phillips’ 2025 season has been defined by movement between rosters rather than a stable starting role. He opened the year with the Washington Commanders after signing in May, working through organized team activities and training camp in an effort to win a spot on the offensive line. When Washington trimmed its roster at the end of the preseason, Phillips was released, leaving him to search for a new opportunity just before the regular season began.
He found that opportunity quickly, joining the Cleveland Browns practice squad in mid-September 2025 and embedding himself with a young offensive line group. While he has not been a regular starter in Cleveland, his experience at both tackle and guard gives the Browns flexibility as the season progresses. With the Browns evaluating their offensive front week to week, Phillips remains a candidate to be elevated to the active roster if injuries or performance issues create an opening.
