Viktoria Hruncakova Bio
Viktória Hrunčáková (née Kužmová; born 11 May 1998) is a Slovak professional tennis player. She has been ranked as high as No. 43 in singles and No. 27 in doubles by the WTA, and she has built her career from a young age in her hometown of Košice. Across her career, she has collected five WTA Tour doubles titles and 26 ITF Circuit titles, including 17 in singles and 9 in doubles. She also contributed to Slovakia reaching the 2024 Billie Jean King Cup final for the first time in the modern era of the competition.
Standing 180 cm tall, Hrunčáková plays an aggressive, hardcourt-preferred style and is sponsored by Yonex. She is married to her coach, Tomáš Hrunčák, and she began competing under her married name in April 2023.
Early Life and Background
Viktória Hrunčáková was born in 1998 in Košice, Slovakia, to her parents Ingrid and Radovan. She was introduced to tennis at age four by her father, who used to run a local tennis club, and the city of Košice, where clay was the only available surface during her early years, became the foundation for her development. Her younger sister, Katarina, later followed her into professional tennis and earned her first WTA ranking points in 2018.
Growing up, Hrunčáková enjoyed watching Ana Ivanovic and Rafael Nadal, two players whose attacking styles influenced her own preferences on court. She continues to represent the VSE TK Akademik Košice tennis club and she is a participant in the STARS for STARS project. In October 2018, she began studying International Relations and Diplomacy at a Czech university with a campus in Bratislava, balancing her academic commitments with the demands of the professional tour.
Path to Tennis
Hrunčáková began playing on the ITF Junior Circuit in January 2012 at the age of 13 and quickly collected early results, including her first singles and doubles titles at the low-level Grade-5 Mostar Open in September of the same year. She was coached during her junior years by Ján Sabovčík, a partnership that produced her first Grand Slam doubles title. Together they split in late 2017, after which she started a new collaboration in December 2017 with Slovak former player Michal Mertiňák. That partnership ended in June 2020.
