He played college football for the Texas Longhorns, earning three All-Big 12 honors during his three seasons in Austin. Worthy holds the 40-yard dash record at the NFL Combine after running 4.21 seconds, and he was selected by the Chiefs in the first round of the 2024 NFL draft.
Early Life and Background
Xavier Worthy was born on April 27, 2003, in Fresno, California, in the United States. He grew up in Fresno and attended Central East High School, where he developed into one of the top wide receiver recruits in the country. Worthy was selected to play in the 2021 All-American Bowl, a prestigious high school showcase, but the game was not played because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Worthy originally committed to the University of Michigan to play college football before flipping his commitment to the University of Texas at Austin. His speed and playmaking ability made him a five-star recruit and one of the most talked-about high school prospects in the 2021 class.
Path to the NFL
Worthy joined the Texas Longhorns in 2021 and earned immediate playing time as a true freshman. That season he posted 981 receiving yards and 12 receiving touchdowns, breaking several Longhorns freshman records previously held by Roy Williams, including 261 receiving yards against rival Oklahoma in a single game. He was named Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year and earned true-freshman All-American honors from outlets such as Pro Football Focus, 247Sports, and the FWAA.
As a sophomore in 2022, Worthy started all 13 games and added 60 receptions for 760 yards and nine touchdowns while serving as the team’s primary punt returner. Xavier Worthy’s first three collegiate seasons at Texas established him as one of the most explosive wide receivers in college football. His 981 receiving yards as a freshman set a Longhorns record, and he followed that with two more productive seasons as a starter. Across his Texas career he was a 2× first-team All-Big 12 selection and a second-team All-Big 12 honoree.
In his junior season of 2023, Worthy caught 75 passes for 1,014 yards and five touchdowns, and he led the nation in punt return yards with 371 yards and one score. He closed his college career as a first-team All-Big 12 pick at wide receiver and return specialist, and a second-team All-American as a punt returner, before turning his focus to the NFL.

Worthy set the 40-yard dash record at the 2024 NFL Combine, running 4.21 seconds and breaking the previous mark of 4.22 set by John Ross. His record-breaking speed, combined with his production at Texas, helped push him into the first round of the 2024 NFL draft. He was selected by the Kansas City Chiefs with the 28th overall pick, a selection acquired in a trade with the Buffalo Bills.

Worthy signed a four-year rookie contract with the Chiefs worth $13.79 million fully guaranteed, covering the 2024 through 2028 seasons. He made an immediate impact, scoring his first career touchdown on his first NFL touch, a 21-yard run, in a home game against the Baltimore Ravens on September 5, 2024, and later adding a 35-yard receiving touchdown in that same 27–20 win. Worthy proposed to his longtime girlfriend, track athlete Tia Jones, on July 9, 2024, and the couple became engaged. In March 2025, Worthy was briefly arrested on an alleged assault charge involving a family member, later identified as Jones, though the charges were dropped the following day. Worthy has since pressed his own charges against Jones alleging theft and assault.
2025 Season Performance
Xavier Worthy opened the 2025 NFL season in Week 1 against the Los Angeles Chargers in São Paulo, where he suffered a dislocated shoulder on a first-quarter collision with teammate Travis Kelce and was ruled out of the 27–21 loss. The injury kept him out of action in Weeks 2 and 3 as he worked through recovery.
Worthy returned to the field later in the season and found the end zone for the first time in 2025 in Week 6 against the Detroit Lions.
