Walter Michael Ezell (born April 6, 1959) is an American politician and former law enforcement officer serving as the U.S. representative for Mississippi’s 4th congressional district since 2023. A Republican from Pascagoula, Mississippi, Ezell previously served as sheriff of Jackson County from 2014 to 2022, where he focused on rooting out corruption and modernizing department operations.
Before entering Congress, Ezell built a law enforcement career that spanned more than three decades, including patrol, investigative, and leadership roles across south Mississippi. In the U.S. House of Representatives, he has prioritized funding for law enforcement, border security, and military support, and he serves on committees that oversee natural resources and infrastructure.

Walter Michael Ezell was born on April 6, 1959, in Pascagoula, Mississippi, to S.H. “Buck” Ezell, a police officer, and Betty Ezell, a secretary for the family church. Growing up in a household connected to both law enforcement and community service shaped his early outlook and laid the foundation for a career in public safety.
He graduated from Pascagoula High School in 1977. While working, Ezell enrolled at the University of Southern Mississippi, where he attended night school and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in criminal justice. Balancing work and study became a defining feature of his early professional years.
Path to US Politics
Ezell’s path to political office began with more than thirty-five years in law enforcement. He started as a patrolman with the Osyka Police Department in 1980 and graduated from the Mississippi Law Enforcement Officers Training Academy in 1981. He rose through the ranks to become a captain in the department.
He continued his training at the FBI National Academy in 1990 and, in 1992, was named captain of the Pascagoula detective department, where he worked with the FBI on the Safe Streets Task Force. In 2024, Ezell won renomination by more than 50 points despite being outspent by primary challenger Carl Boyanton, earning the endorsement of former President Donald Trump.
