Nick Langworthy Bio
Nicholas Andrew Langworthy (born February 27, 1981) is an American politician serving as the U.S. Representative for New York’s 23rd congressional district since 2023. A Republican, he previously chaired the New York State Republican Committee beginning in July 2019 and led the Erie County Republican Committee starting in 2010, becoming the youngest state and county chair in party history. Before entering elected office, he worked on multiple congressional campaigns, managed district offices, and founded the polling firm Liberty Opinion Research. Langworthy resides in Pendleton, New York.
Early Life and Background
Nicholas Andrew Langworthy was born on February 27, 1981, in Jamestown, New York. He grew up in the nearby community of South Dayton and attended Pine Valley Central School, from which he graduated in 1999. His upbringing in the rural Southern Tier region of western New York shaped his early interest in local politics and community service.
After high school, Langworthy enrolled at Niagara University, where he studied political science and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. While at Niagara, he founded the university’s chapter of the College Republicans, an experience that helped launch his career in party politics. He went on to chair the New York College Republicans, further expanding his network within the state party.
Path to US Politics
Langworthy’s entry into US politics began with internships and campaign work during and after college. He interned in the office of New York Governor George Pataki and managed a 2000 congressional campaign for Brett Sommer. These early experiences introduced him to the operational side of political campaigns and connected him with established figures in the New York Republican Party.
He soon joined the staff of Congressman Thomas M. Reynolds, managing Reynolds’s successful reelection campaigns in 2004 and 2006. Working in Reynolds’s office also introduced him to Erin Baker, who worked on Reynolds’s staff and later became his wife. Langworthy continued to build his resume by managing the successful 2008 congressional campaign of Representative Chris Lee and serving as Lee’s district office director until May 2010, experiences that established him as a rising figure within the state party.
Nick Langworthy Career
Early Career (2000–2010)
Langworthy’s early career focused on campaign management and congressional staffing in western New York. After his work on the Sommer campaign in 2000, he spent several years working for Congressman Thomas M. Reynolds, eventually managing two successful reelection bids in 2004 and 2006. He then managed Chris Lee’s successful 2008 congressional campaign and served as Lee’s district office director until 2010.
In addition to his campaign work, Langworthy founded Liberty Opinion Research, a polling firm where he continues to serve as president. The firm gave him insight into voter sentiment and data-driven campaigning, skills that would prove valuable in his later leadership roles.
Erie County Republican Committee Era (2010–2019)
In 2010, Erie County Republican Committee chair James P. Domagalski resigned to run for the New York State Senate, opening the door for new leadership. Langworthy positioned himself as a leading candidate and won a unanimous special election on May 5, 2010, becoming the youngest chair of either political party in Erie County’s history. He was 29 at the time.
Langworthy quickly established himself as a political force by endorsing Carl Paladino in the 2010 Republican gubernatorial primary, the only county chair to do so. When Paladino’s primary upset victory helped Republicans take control of the Erie County legislature, Buffalo News chief political columnist Bob McCarthy dubbed Langworthy the “GOP’s Young Elder.” In 2016, President-elect Donald Trump named him to the executive committee of his presidential transition team. Langworthy served as Erie County chair until September 2019, when Karl J. Simmeth Jr. succeeded him.
New York State Republican Committee Era (2019–2022)
Langworthy began campaigning for the chairmanship of the New York State Republican Committee in 2018, challenging incumbent Ed Cox. On May 20, 2019, after Monroe County Republican Chair Bill Reilich endorsed Langworthy, Cox withdrew his candidacy. On July 1, 2019, Langworthy was named chair of the New York State Republican Committee, becoming the youngest state chair in party history.
As state chair, Langworthy oversaw party strategy and candidate recruitment across New York during a challenging period for state Republicans. His tenure at the state level lasted until he successfully ran for Congress in 2022.
U.S. House of Representatives Era (2023–Present)
In June 2022, U.S. Representative Chris Jacobs announced he would withdraw from his race and not seek reelection in New York’s 23rd congressional district, a heavily Republican seat covering parts of the Buffalo suburbs and most of the Southern Tier. Langworthy announced his candidacy, though his Pendleton home had previously been in the 27th district before redistricting merged much of that territory into the 23rd.
On August 24, 2022, Langworthy won the Republican primary, defeating Carl Paladino in the decisive contest for the district. In the November general election, he defeated Democratic nominee Max Della Pia and took office in 2023. In the U.S. House, Langworthy serves on the House Rules Committee. He has voted on a range of high-profile measures, including a 2024 vote against including the Major Richard Star Act in the FY 25 NDAA and 2025 votes against amendments and resolutions seeking the release of files related to Jeffrey Epstein, actions he characterized as efforts at transparency.
Notable Events and Milestones
Among the signature moments of Langworthy’s career are his 2010 selection as the youngest Erie County party chair in history and his 2019 elevation to chair the New York State Republican Committee at a younger age than any previous state chair. His 2022 primary victory over Carl Paladino and subsequent general election win launched his career in the U.S. House of Representatives.
