Jamie Lee Curtis Stars in Bold Murder, She Wrote Reboot

The classic television series Murder, She Wrote is being revived with Jamie Lee Curtis stepping into the iconic role of Jessica Fletcher. The new adaptation will be a film, with production set to begin soon and Jason Moore, known for directing Pitch Perfect, attached as director, according to Variety.

Jamie Lee Curtis expressed cautious excitement about the project last year, telling Entertainment Tonight,

“We’re a minute away, but yeah, [I’m] very excited. Very excited. But I’m tamping down my enthusiasm until we start shooting. I have a couple of other things to hustle, but then I’ll get to enjoy that work.”

The film’s screenplay is being crafted by Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo, with producers Amy Pascal and Lord Miller overseeing the project for Universal Studios.

Jason Moore has a demanding itinerary this year. Aside from directing the Murder, She Wrote reboot, he is also leading the Legally Blonde prequel series Elle, directing the West End revival of Avenue Q in April, and working on film adaptations of Guncle and This Time Tomorrow.

The Premise Behind Murder, She Wrote

The original Murder, She Wrote series centered on Jessica Fletcher, played by Angela Lansbury, a retired English teacher and widow who turns to writing mystery novels. Although she finds success as an author, she lives quietly in the small town of Cabot Cove, where her knack for solving fictional mysteries soon helps her unravel real-life crimes.

Over its 12-season run from 1984 to 1996, the series garnered two Emmy Awards and multiple Golden Globe wins, including four Best Actress awards for Lansbury and two Best Television Series trophies. Despite 12 Emmy nominations for Lansbury’s portrayal of Fletcher, she never captured the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series award. Supporting roles were memorable in the series, featuring actors such as Tom Bosley, William Windom, Ron Masak, Will Nye, and Louis Herthum, with Lansbury as the only cast member present in every season.

Following the series, several made-for-TV movies featuring Jessica Fletcher were produced: South by Southwest (1997), A Story to Die For (2000), The Last Free Man (2001), and The Celtic Riddle (2003).

Anticipation Around Jamie Lee Curtis’s New Take

Details about Jamie Lee Curtis’s portrayal of Fletcher remain under wraps, but anticipation among fans is high. The reboot signals a fresh chapter for the beloved mystery writer, now being reimagined through Curtis’s performance, director Moore’s vision, and the script by Blum and Angelo. With Universal backing the project and its accomplished production team, this reboot aims to honor the legacy of the original while introducing the character to new audiences.

Given Curtis’s own emphasis on measured enthusiasm until filming begins, viewers can expect a carefully crafted film that balances respect for the past with contemporary storytelling, marking an exciting development in the Murder, She Wrote franchise.
