Kristen Stewart has openly criticized Donald Trump’s administration, expressing concern that “reality is breaking” amid the current political environment. Speaking to The Times, the actor and new director discussed the challenges she faced making her latest film adaptation of Lidia Yuknavitch’s memoir, The Chronology of Water.
Challenges Filming Outside the United States
Stewart revealed much of the movie’s production took place in Latvia, explaining that filming in the United States
“would have been impossible to do in the States”
. The star’s frustration extends to Trump’s previously threatened tariffs on films produced internationally, which she has condemned as a dark omen for the industry’s future in America.
A Bleak Outlook on America’s Cultural Landscape
Elaborating on her views, Stewart conveyed her deep unease about the political and social state of the country. She reflected on the pervasive anxiety, saying,
“We’re living in a world that’s folding in on itself by the split second… we’re all looking over our shoulders going: ‘Holy shit.’ The slippage is just terrifying.”
She also emphasized the need to actively reshape reality rather than succumb to its breakdown, urging audiences to
“take a page out of his book and create the reality we want to live in.”
Uncertainty About Continued Life and Work in the U.S.
Currently residing between Los Angeles and New York, Stewart expressed uncertainty about her future in the United States, which she describes as restrictive for her creative freedom. She stated,
“Probably not. I can’t work freely there. But I don’t want to give up completely. I’d like to make movies in Europe and then shove them down the throat of the American people.”
Past Tensions Between Stewart and Trump
Stewart’s relationship with Trump has been tense before, particularly after Trump publicly criticized her in 2012. This occurred following her affair with Rupert Sanders while she was dating Robert Pattinson. Trump tweeted:
“Robert Pattinson should not take back Kristen Stewart. She cheated on him like a dog & will do it again — just watch. He can do much better!”
The Chronology of Water to Premiere in the UK
The Chronology of Water, Stewart’s directorial debut, is scheduled to be released in UK cinemas on February 6th. The film marks a new chapter in her career while tackling emotionally intense material, reflecting the pressures and concerns Stewart has shared regarding the current cultural and political climate.
