Stephen King Reveals Why He Won’t Write an IT Sequel

Stephen King has crafted dozens of sequels across his prolific career, yet he has made it clear that he will not write a sequel to his iconic novel IT. Despite the continued interest from audiences, including the recent HBO prequel series, King expressed in a 2013 Reddit interview that revisiting the terrifying entity Pennywise is too unsettling, even for him.

The Legacy of IT and Its Adaptations

Published in 1986, IT follows seven children in a small town who face an evil force that takes on the form of a clown named Pennywise, preying on their deepest fears. The novel has inspired multiple screen adaptations, beginning with a 1990 television miniseries starring Tim Curry, whose portrayal of Pennywise remains memorable.

More recent film adaptations in 2017 and 2019 brought a renewed wave of popularity. The 2017 movie became the highest-grossing horror film ever, with IT Chapter Two continuing the narrative. HBO’s IT: Welcome to Derry, a prequel set 27 years before the events of the first film, explores Pennywise’s origins and concluded its first season in December 2023.

Tim Curry’s Personal Reflections on Playing Pennywise

In his upcoming memoir Vagabond, Tim Curry disclosed his own struggles with playing the killer clown. He admitted to having a personal fear of clowns during filming, saying,

“Not quite to the extent that I literally couldn’t look at myself in the mirror, as has often been reported, but I certainly didn’t delight in my reflection.”

— Tim Curry, Actor

Curry further described his mixed feelings about the role:

“In any case, the thought of embodying this killer clown made me feel simultaneously uncomfortable and like I would be pushing myself to take it on. So, with much uncertainty, the type of which confirmed I was still attempting to embrace my contradictions, I replied: ‘Yes, I’m interested,’”

The Enduring Impact and Future of the IT Franchise

Although new stories within the IT universe continue to emerge through television, Stephen King’s reluctance to create a literary sequel places limits on further original content from the author himself. Pennywise remains a chilling figure in horror culture, but King’s decision suggests that the creature’s story has reached a definitive point in his mind, preserving the unsettling atmosphere that made IT a lasting horror classic.
