Natalie Portman Reveals She Misplaced a Rib Filming Black Swan

Natalie Portman, renowned for her intense role in the psychological thriller Black Swan, opened up about a painful injury she sustained during the film’s production. The actress, now 44, disclosed that while filming the 2010 movie, she misplaced a rib due to the demanding physical nature of her role, highlighting the challenges she faced balancing dance and acting.

Physical Toll of Portraying a Ballerina in Black Swan

Portman’s portrayal of Nina Sayers, a fragile and mentally unstable ballerina, required not only convincing acting but also rigorous ballet training. The director of the movie, Darren Aronofsky, sought realism in depicting the demanding world of professional ballet. This intense approach led to Portman enduring a significant physical strain.

She confessed on The Drew Barrymore Show,

“I misplaced a rib or something,”

explaining the discomfort further:

“It, like, went under. It was from being lifted all the time. That was really wild.”

The injury stemmed from the frequent lifting motions typical in ballet performances.

Supporting Portman’s transformation was Mary Helen Bower, a former dancer with the New York City Ballet, who worked closely with her throughout the shoot. Bower reflected on Portman’s commitment, emphasizing the grueling training schedule required.

“The idea is, if you’re going to play a ballerina, you’re going to have to train like one,”

Bower said, praising Portman’s dedication.

She described their daily routine:

“We’re meeting at 5, 5:30 in the morning, doing ballet for two or three hours. She goes and works a 12-hour day and meets me at the gym at night, and we’re doing our toning exercises and swimming a mile. And then she goes home and goes to sleep and then we get up the next day and do it again. And this is six days a week for months and months and months leading up to the movie.”

This physical regimen contributed to the extreme demands that ultimately caused Portman’s rib injury.

Behind the Scenes: Dynamics Between Co-Stars and Direction Style

Black Swan starred alongside Mila Kunis, Winona Ryder, Barbara Hershey, and Vincent Cassel, creating a dynamic and layered cast. The film’s director, Darren Aronofsky, admitted to using a provocative directing style to enhance the tension required by the story. When celebrating the film’s 15th anniversary, he revealed his attempts to stir conflict between Portman and Kunis during production.

Aronofsky said in an interview with Vogue,

“I was trying to be a sneaky director and make them argue.”

He added,

“Mila and Natalie both realized very quickly what I was doing and made fun of me, so it quickly became a joke that we all understood. They’re both very clever and were instantly privy to whatever trick I was playing.”

Despite the director’s efforts to create conflict, both actresses maintained a strong friendship. Portman shared,

“I remember being separated from Mila and that we weren’t in the same space a lot when we weren’t shooting,”

pointing out that Aronofsky’s tactics did not succeed. She also recalled a moment when Aronofsky tried to spark jealousy by saying,

“Ya know, Nat, Mila’s dancing so well.”

To this, Portman responded,

“Of course she is! She’s so f–king talented and I love her so much and I’m happy she’s doing a great job.”

Kunis added her perspective about the director’s attempts to fuel competition:

“Darren would tell me, ‘Nat is working really, really hard. She’s not even taking Saturdays and Sundays off.’ Then I would text Nat and she’d be like, ‘…No, I’m not?’ I think that’s how we figured out what Darren was up to, but it was all in good fun.”

Their friendship was deeper than any manufactured rivalry.

The Origins of Casting and Friendship Between Lead Actresses

The close relationship between Portman and Kunis precedes the film’s production. Portman noted their camaraderie and how it influenced casting decisions.

“We had been friends for years and I remember being at the Rose Bowl Flea Market with her, talking about this ballet movie I was making with Darren,”

she said. Portman recounted how discovering Kunis’s ballet background helped solidify her role:

“Mila said, ‘I remember when I would take off my pointe shoes…’ and I was like, ‘Wait, you did ballet?!’ I immediately called Darren and said there was this amazing actress with ballet experience who would be perfect for Lily.”

Kunis’s ballet experience added authenticity to her character Lily, the ambitious dancer who threatens Nina’s position, fueling the film’s central rivalry and Nina’s psychological unraveling.

Recognition and Lasting Impact of Black Swan

Black Swan earned critical acclaim, receiving five Academy Award nominations in 2011, including Best Motion Picture of the Year and Best Achievement in Directing for Aronofsky’s efforts. Natalie Portman was awarded the Oscar for Best Actress for her portrayal of Nina Sayers, cementing her performance as one of the seminal roles of her career.

The film’s exploration of mental instability and the psychological pressures of ballet left a lasting impression on audiences and critics alike, with its success reflecting both the physical and emotional intensity delivered by the cast.

Aronofsky’s candid remarks about his directing style and Portman’s disclosure of her injury provide a deeper understanding of the challenges behind creating such a demanding performance. Their stories help illuminate the sacrifices actors often endure to bring authenticity and power to the screen.
