Ben Affleck and Matt Damon have sustained one of Hollywood’s most enduring friendships for more than four decades. Their bond began in 1980 when they first met as children in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and has since developed through various stages of life, both personally and professionally. This close connection was highlighted recently at the New York City premiere of their new film, The Rip, where Damon spoke about the shifts in their relationship over the years, emphasizing how their friendship has adapted amidst changing life circumstances.
“Well the circumstances of our lives have changed a lot and obviously we’ve gone through different phases of life, having kids, so those things are vastly different but I feel like who we are as people was kind of established together a long time ago in our adolescence and teens and those things have been pretty consistent,”
Damon, known for his role as Jason Bourne, shared during the January 13 event.
Shared Childhood and Breakthrough Success
Affleck and Damon first crossed paths when Matt Damon was 10 and Ben Affleck was 8, growing up in the same neighborhood in Cambridge. Their early friendship deepened through common interests such as acting and baseball during their high school years. This connection laid the groundwork for their collaboration on the screenplay for Good Will Hunting in 1997, a project that earned them the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. The film also starred both actors as best friends, mirroring their real-life relationship.
Beyond their shared accomplishments, their personal lives unfolded in parallel yet distinct ways. Damon married Luciana Barroso in 2005 and they have four daughters together. Affleck’s family life included a decade-long marriage to actress Jennifer Garner, with whom he shares three children; they finalized their divorce in 2018. More recently, Affleck married Jennifer Lopez in 2022, but the couple separated two years later.

Working Together and Revisiting Collaborations
Across nearly 45 years, Affleck and Damon’s creative partnership has produced numerous films including Dogma, Air, and The Last Duel. In 2022, they expanded their partnership by launching Artists Equity, a production company aimed at fostering more collaborative projects within the industry.
Reflecting on their intermittent professional breaks, Affleck spoke candidly about the reasons behind stepping back from frequent collaboration in the late 2000s and early 2010s.
“At some point, we got convinced of this idea, like, ‘Well, you don’t wanna work together all the time, you’ll become sort of associated with each other.’ And that’s negative,”
he told Vanity Fair.
“But ultimately, it was sort of like, ‘F–k that. I don’t know, let’s work together.’ Cause that’s the beautiful, that’s the fun.”
Damon echoed this sentiment, adding,
“We can now look at the last 20 years and go like, ‘Well, the benefit of hindsight, what would we have done differently?’ And I think we both came to the conclusion that we would’ve worked together a lot more.”
Latest Collaboration and What Lies Ahead
The pair reunited recently as actors and producers for the Netflix crime thriller The Rip, which was released on January 16. The film also stars Teyana Taylor, Kyle Chandler, Steven Yeun, and Sasha Calle, highlighting the duo’s ongoing presence both in front of and behind the camera.
Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’s long-standing friendship continues to withstand the pressures of fame and changing personal circumstances while inspiring their creative ventures. Their ability to evolve while maintaining a core connection speaks to the deep-rooted nature of their bond, suggesting that future collaborations will likely follow as they navigate both friendship and filmmaking together.
