Harrison Ford Hints at Retirement After Final Role in Shrinking

At 83 years old, Harrison Ford is contemplating retirement as he reflects on his latest role in the Apple TV+ series Shrinking, where he portrays a therapist living with Parkinson’s disease. Speaking at a press event in Los Angeles on Tuesday, Ford suggested that this part could be his final performance, signaling potential changes in his career.

Ford Considers Ending Acting Career with Shrinking

During a panel discussion with his co-stars, Ford expressed satisfaction with his work on Shrinking and hinted that ending his acting career with this show would feel fulfilling.

“Where do you go from here? The kind of work that we’re able to do is remarkable given the tools we have to work with, and the notion that lies behind this series. And if it was all over here, that would be sufficient,”

Ford said, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

The actor went on to emphasize how meaningful this role has been after decades in the industry.

“This has been a different kind of job for me, and I’ve been doing this for a long time,”

Ford remarked.

“This is very special and it really nurtures me and makes me feel like what we’re doing has value and importance. I look for that in my life and I’m happy to have found it here.”

His candid remarks received enthusiastic applause from an intimate audience of about 300 attendees. Ashley Nicole Black, the executive producer of Shrinking and moderator of the panel, concluded the session by noting,

“There’s never been a better place to end a panel.”

The Cast and Awards Surrounding the Series

Harrison Ford stars alongside Jason Segel, Jessica Williams, Michael Urie, Lukita Maxwell, Christa Miller, and Luke Tennie in Shrinking. His role as Dr. Paul Rhoades earned Ford his first Emmy nomination last year, along with recognition from the Golden Globe Awards, Critics’ Choice Awards, and Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Portraying Parkinson’s Disease with Authenticity

In the current season of Shrinking, Ford shares scenes with Michael J. Fox, who has lived with Parkinson’s disease since his diagnosis in 1991 and portrays one of Ford’s character’s patients on the show. The actor acknowledged the weight of representing the disease authentically.

“It was a bit daunting because I am representing a character that has Parkinson’s, and Michael has the real thing,”

Ford said during the panel.

“I’ve always felt a real sense of responsibility for getting that part of my story right.”

Ford shared praise for Fox, calling him “extraordinary, generous and lovely” despite not having met him before working on the show. He added,

“It was an extraordinary experience to work with him. He is such a powerful presence. Such grace and courage and indomitability, and some of that, I hope, will help me color my portrayal of a character with Parkinson’s.”

Ford also highlighted the lighter moments of the experience, commenting,

“That’s the serious part of it. But the fun part of it was there as well. It was an extraordinary experience, I think for all of us, to be with Michael and see how he does what he does. He’s so funny as well.”

Michael J. Fox’s Praise for Ford’s Performance

Michael J. Fox recently revealed to Vanity Fair that Ford’s depiction of Parkinson’s touched him deeply.

“What I wasn’t prepared for was how much of his own understanding of the disease he brought to it,”

Fox said.

“I mean, I recognized Parkinson’s in his eyes. The things I was feeling, I recognized in the way he was expressing himself.”

Addressing Retirement: Past and Present Views

Although Ford’s recent comments suggest retirement might be near, he has previously dismissed the idea of stepping away from acting soon. Last year, he told Variety,

“No. That’s one of the things I thought was attractive about the job of an actor, was that they need old people, too, to play old people’s parts.”

His current openness to retirement plans centers mainly on the fulfillment he feels in his current role, implying that if Shrinking turns out to be his last work, it would be an honorable conclusion to a long and celebrated career.
