Michael Keaton Reveals How He First Met Catherine O’Hara

Michael Keaton recently reflected on his longstanding friendship with Catherine O’Hara, sharing how their similar family backgrounds helped spark a bond that lasted for decades. The Batman actor spoke on February 6 at Harvard University’s Hasty Pudding Theatricals 2026 Man of the Year event, where he recounted their initial meeting and growing connection.

Keaton described how he first got to know O’Hara during a period when he was working in Toronto. Both coming from large families—each having seven siblings—helped them relate to one another and deepen their friendship.

“I was a big SCTV fan. I am the biggest SCTV fan. And I’m trying to think, when was it? I think I was doing a movie in Toronto. I remember we must have met or known each other a little bit, because, like myself, she has a big family. She’s one of seven, and I’m one of seven. And so somehow we got to be friends.”

He further recalled a specific night spent shooting pool with O’Hara and her siblings, illustrating how their personal connection grew beyond the professional realm.

“I remember a night in Toronto where she had a summer [with her] brothers and sisters, and we were all shooting pool in some bar somewhere. But I think I had known her before, kind of having a hard time remembering it.”

Keaton admitted that he struggled to remember exactly when they first met but emphasized that their friendship lasted well before their famous collaboration on Beetlejuice. He also expressed his admiration for O’Hara’s towering presence in comedy, describing her almost as a goddess in the field.

Shared Work and Rising Careers

Michael Keaton recounted how their friendship intersected with their professional lives, including a small film project called Game 6, set in Boston. Keaton suggested O’Hara for the role of his ex-wife, which led to her involvement in the film after a phone call from him.

“And I was doing this tiny little movie called Game 6, which is actually a really good little movie. It takes place in Boston, and Griffin [Dunne] and I were talking, and they hadn’t cast it [yet]. I said, ‘Hey, how [about] Catherine O’Hara as my ex-wife? Yeah, you think she’d do it?’ So I called her, and she came down.”

Despite the exact date of their first encounter remaining unclear, Keaton made it clear their friendship grew stronger through years of working together and shared experiences.

“I guess that was after the first Beetlejuice. But I knew her before that. And to answer your question, I don’t remember what the first time was when I met her, but we got to be friends in addition to just working together as well.”

Honoring Catherine O’Hara’s Legacy After Her Passing

Catherine O’Hara died at the age of 71 in late January. While the cause of her death has not yet been confirmed, it was known that she had dextrocardia, a rare congenital condition where the heart and other organs are located on the opposite side of the body. This news deeply affected those who admired her, including Michael Keaton.

Shortly after O’Hara’s passing, Keaton shared a moving tribute on Instagram, posting a photo of the two together and reflecting on the close relationship they shared.

“We go back before the first Beetlejuice. She’s been my pretend wife, my pretend nemesis and my real life, true friend. This one hurts. Man am I gonna miss her. Thinking about Beau as well.”

Keaton also expressed his admiration for O’Hara in a feature for TIME magazine on February 5, recalling the rarity and joy of working comedically alongside her over nearly four decades.

“With almost anyone else, I’d have forgotten it within seconds. But with her? It wasn’t about the joke landing. It was because I liked her so damn much. To work comedically with Catherine, as I was lucky to get to do not just at the awards show but on two Beetlejuice movies and projects like The Paper and Game 6 across nearly 40 years, was like breathing rarefied air. And between takes, it was the greatest hang on set. The only thing better was the hang off set—in real life, as I call it.”

He further highlighted the value of their friendship beyond their professional dealings.

“To have a woman as your friend is a great thing. To have a brilliantly funny woman as your friend is special. To have Catherine O’Hara as your friend is a blessing.”

Enduring Impact of Michael Keaton and Catherine O’Hara’s Friendship

Michael Keaton’s reflections reveal a deeply personal connection with Catherine O’Hara that extended far beyond their time on screen together. Their shared family histories and mutual respect for each other’s craft laid a foundation for a decades-long friendship, intertwined with professional collaborations in iconic films. O’Hara’s passing marks a significant loss in the entertainment industry, but her influence and the memories forged with Keaton and others endure.

As both continue to be remembered for their outstanding contributions to film and comedy, Keaton’s tribute underscores the lasting significance of genuine friendship amid the pressures and demands of show business.
