Jared Leto has taken on the challenge of portraying the villain Skeletor in the forthcoming Masters of the Universe film, aiming to bring a fresh yet faithful take on the character. The Oscar-winning actor approached director Travis Knight with a strong vision for embodying He-Man’s notorious foe, determined to “swing for the fences” in the role.
Director Travis Knight revealed that Leto has a personal connection to Skeletor and a deep appreciation for the character’s legacy.
“Jared approached us, because he loves Skeletor and has his own history with the character,”
Knight explained to Empire magazine.
“He wanted to swing for the fences. And ultimately we landed on something that I’m really happy with. Skeletor’s kind of the embodiment of toxic masculinity.”
Crafting a New Version of a Classic Villain
Knight emphasized the importance of selecting an actor capable of molding their unique interpretation of Skeletor, inspired by the original animated series.
“Skeletor was a really interesting villain. He looked cool. He was scary. He was funny. He was insecure. And then of course he had this distinctive voice,”
Knight said.
“I wanted someone to craft their own version of that.”
For the visual design, Knight insisted on maintaining the iconic elements fans expect, including the skull face, large purple hood, and hollow eye sockets. “Skeletor has a skull face,” Knight stated firmly.
“That’s just the way it is. It’s a living, talking, emoting skull, and that’s that.”
Supporting Cast and Nostalgia Behind the Film
Masters of the Universe also stars Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Adam Glenn, better known as He-Man, alongside Idris Elba as Man-At-Arms, Alison Brie portraying Evil-Lyn, and Camila Mendes as Teela. Elba expressed his personal enthusiasm for the project, sharing how much the original toys and cartoons meant to him growing up. According to Elba,
“a really big part of (his) childhood”
was shaped by these classic figures.
The actor praised Travis Knight’s dedication to honoring the original series’ aesthetic.
“Travis, who’s an incredible director, wanted to pay homage to the aesthetic of the original. I was all for that,”
Elba said. He also joked about the physical preparation needed for the role:
“Though it made me think, ‘S**t, I’ve gotta get into the gym!’”
Reflecting on the experience, Elba likened the cast and characters to
“being at a big amusement arcade with all these massive characters.”
Upcoming Release and Anticipation
