The live-action Masters of the Universe film, directed by Travis Knight, is scheduled to premiere globally in June. The movie features Jared Leto as Skeletor, the iconic villain, with Knight recently providing insights into Leto’s interpretation of the character and how Skeletor embodies deeper themes.
Director Travis Knight’s Vision for Skeletor’s Character
Travis Knight described Skeletor as a “really interesting villain” and emphasized that Jared Leto was given freedom to create his own version of the antagonist, pushing boundaries with his performance. Knight stated,
“He looked cool. He was scary. He was funny. He was insecure. And then of course he had this distinctive voice,”
highlighting the complex traits Leto brought to the role.
Jared Leto’s Enthusiasm and the Film’s Thematic Direction
It was Leto himself who approached the film’s makers expressing his enthusiasm to play Skeletor, reflecting the actor’s passion for the character. Knight elaborated on this collaboration, saying,
“He wanted to swing for the fences. And ultimately we landed on something that I’m really happy with. Skeletor’s kind of the embodiment of toxic masculinity,”
revealing that the character was crafted to explore modern social issues through the villain’s persona.
Plot Overview and Main Cast of Masters of the Universe
The newly released trailer introduces Nicholas Galitzine as He-Man, who discovers his true identity and begins his battle against Skeletor. This film adapts Mattel’s well-known toy line that inspired a hit animated series during the 1980s, and a 1987 movie. It follows Prince Adam of Eternia, who transforms into He-Man through the Power Sword, gaining extraordinary abilities to defend his home planet and Castle Grayskull.
The film also stars Camila Mendes as Teela, Alison Brie as Evil-Lyn, Idris Elba as Man-at-Arms, Sam C Wilson as Trap Jaw, Kojo Attah as Tri-Klops, Hafthor Bjornsson as Goat Man, and Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson as Malcolm/Fisto. Kristen Wiig voices the character Roboto, adding another notable name to the ensemble.
Writing and Production Team Behind the Film
The script is developed by Chris Butler, building on earlier drafts from David Callaham and brothers Aaron and Adam Nee. The project is supported by Escape Artists’ producers Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, and Steve Tisch, alongside Mattel Films’ Robbie Brenner, ensuring experienced leadership oversees this ambitious reboot.
