John Lithgow’s Harry Potter Role Sparks Hurt Feelings Among Co-Star

John Lithgow will portray Albus Dumbledore in HBO’s new adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series, a casting that has stirred discomfort among some of his colleagues. The 80-year-old actor’s decision to take on the iconic role has been described as “vaguely hurtful” by Aud Mason-Hyde, Lithgow’s co-star in the queer family drama Jimpa, who plays his character’s non-binary grandchild.

Mason-Hyde expressed unease over Lithgow’s involvement given Rowling’s contentious public comments on transgender issues, despite Lithgow’s otherwise supportive and respectful relationship with the cast.

Co-Star Shares Mixed Feelings About Lithgow’s Role in Harry Potter

Aud Mason-Hyde, who works closely with John Lithgow as a mentor figure on Jimpa, revealed to Out magazine their conflicted reaction to the casting news. While they praised Lithgow’s talent and kindness, the choice to join the Harry Potter project left them unsettled.

They stated,

“I don’t think it’s worth speaking to John’s reasoning by any means, but I do also think that it’s a strange decision, for sure. And also I found it disconcerting, maybe, is the right word.”

Mason-Hyde further explained,

“He is such an incredibly talented actor, but also such a beautiful human to make work with, and that was my experience with John.”

They acknowledged feeling safe and supported by Lithgow’s allyship, adding,

“I never felt invalidated or questioned or doubted in my identity or in my transness by him. I consistently felt that he was a very loving and a very guiding co-star.”

However, they admitted the casting still caused emotional discomfort:

“And so there’s an element of this that feels vaguely hurtful.”

Lithgow Addresses Criticism Surrounding the Harry Potter Adaptation

John Lithgow has responded to the backlash surrounding his role, emphasizing his personal views and distancing himself from Rowling’s reputation. Speaking at a screening of Jimpa held at the Rotterdam Film Festival, Lithgow asserted he has never met Rowling and described her opposition to transgender identities as “ironic and inexplicable.”

He commented,

“I take this subject extremely seriously. She has created this amazing canon for young people and it has jumped into the consciousness of the society. It’s about good versus evil, kindness versus cruelty. I find her views ironic and inexplicable. I’ve never met her, she’s not really involved in this production at all. But the people who are, are remarkable.”

Lithgow revealed that he faced pressure from others to reject the role due to its association with Rowling’s controversial views, but chose to proceed regardless.

“It was a hard decision. It made me uncomfortable and unhappy that people insisted I walk away from the job. I chose not to do that,”

he shared.

Complex Impact of the Casting on Cast and Audience

The decision for John Lithgow to embody Dumbledore involves navigating a complicated space between respect for the original Harry Potter material and the public debate surrounding its author. Mason-Hyde’s conflicted feelings highlight the ripple effect of Rowling’s remarks on those connected to the show, while Lithgow’s stance underscores his commitment to the role and the story’s themes of kindness and acceptance.

Moving forward, the controversy may continue to shape the reception of the series and spark discussions about inclusivity in adaptations of beloved works. Lithgow’s involvement stresses the ongoing tension between an artist’s personal beliefs and the legacies of the characters they portray.
