Christopher Nolan recently explained how the development of Interstellar changed after he became involved, shifting away from the version originally planned by Steven Spielberg. The 2014 film, which many regard as one of Nolan’s best works, achieved both critical praise and box office success. Nolan shared these insights during a Q&A with Timothée Chalamet, held before an IMAX 70mm screening at AMC Universal Citywalk IMAX in Los Angeles.
Originally, Interstellar was conceived as a science fiction movie grounded in authentic scientific principles, based on an idea pitched by physicist Kip Thorne to Steven Spielberg and Paramount. Nolan described the initial concept as
doing a science fiction movie about looking out into the greater universe with real science behind it,
reflecting the authentic scientific ambitions behind the story.
Screenplay Development and Key Changes
Nolan revealed that his brother Jonathan Nolan took over the screenplay duties while they were working on The Dark Knight. Jonathan dedicated many years to refining the story, which went through multiple versions before gaining momentum. Christopher Nolan said,
He worked on it for a lot of years. It had incredible ideas and moved through all these different iterations… But until Steven was ready to make it, whatever it is, it never quite got that momentum. Steven went off to do another film, so it became available.
After Spielberg shifted focus to other projects, the opportunity opened for Christopher Nolan to step in. He had been developing his own concepts related to time and space, admitting,
I had been working on a time travel idea… things looking at time,
and acknowledged that these were
half-baked projects that I hadn’t committed to.

Once the project was available, Nolan approached Jonathan with the idea of blending his own concepts into the screenplay’s existing framework. His brother agreed, recognizing Nolan’s passion for capturing the core excitement behind the project. Nolan said,
He could tell the spirit of what I was trying to do was to get to what he was initially excited about it.
