Aldis Hodge Reveals How Alex Cross Mirrors His Hawkman Role

Aldis Hodge, known for his role as Hawkman, has shared insights into how his current character, Alex Cross, reflects a similar heroic spirit despite their different worlds. Playing the lead in the Prime Video series “Cross,” Hodge explained that both Hawkman and Alex Cross are engaged in battles against evil forces, with Cross embodying a grounded, real-world fight against crime in Washington DC. He elaborated that, although Hawkman fights supervillains and Cross tracks serial killers, their missions are rooted in confronting oppression and protecting the vulnerable.

Comic Books and Superheroes as Symbols of Resistance

Hodge revealed that his longtime passion for comic books and graphic novels deeply informs his approach to acting. He sees superheroes as symbols crafted to represent resistance against oppression, offering a way for people to imagine themselves empowered in the face of injustice. According to Hodge, this theme resonates strongly in Alex Cross, who daily battles societal wrongs and violent criminals through his expertise as a homicide detective and forensic psychologist.

“I grew up on graphic novels and comics. I love anime. I’m addicted to anime. Superheroes and comics were invented as symbolism for dealing with oppression in ways you couldn’t directly. You made yourself super. You created ideology around opposing what suppresses you. I think Alex Cross embodies that. Where I start with every character is their honesty. What do they want? Who are they? Where are they at? What are they going through? What are their desires? Their fears? Their vulnerabilities? Their strengths? That never changes. Every character’s journey is different, but I need to understand that honesty in order to portray them.”

Hodge’s emphasis on honesty plays a critical role in shaping his characters, emphasizing their humanity and inner conflicts as foundations for authentic performance.
