Jamie Foxx expressed his ambition to create a Jamie Foxx musical remake of the classic story A Star Is Born, aiming to bring fresh energy to the project in the early 2000s. After his acclaimed role in Oliver Stone’s 1999 film Any Given Sunday, Foxx planned to collaborate again with Stone on this musical adaptation, intending to feature prominent singers to draw a younger, music-loving audience.
Jamie Foxx’s Collaboration with Oliver Stone Sparks New Project
Following Foxx’s breakthrough performance as quarterback Willie Beamen in Any Given Sunday, he and director Oliver Stone set their sights on developing a new version of A Star Is Born. Historically, the story has been told through musical films, including the 1954 Judy Garland-James Mason version and the 1976 Barbra Streisand-Kris Kristofferson remake, both featuring leads who performed musically as well as acted. Foxx wanted to maintain this musical tradition while adding a faster pace to captivate contemporary viewers.
The actor shared with Entertainment Weekly,
Oliver mirrored the coach in Any Given Sunday,
emphasizing the mentorship he received during their collaboration. He added,
Me being a young African American actor who really hadn’t had a chance to get down before, I was willing to do whatever to learn from him.
Foxx further reflected,
I came out whipped into shape—and with a great relationship. He taught me a lot about never settling, and that’s why I’m ready to get down again.

Challenges in Casting the Female Lead for the Musical
A key difficulty for Foxx was securing a leading lady who could deliver both strong screen presence and musical hits, as the project required sixteen hit songs to succeed. He noted,
We need someone who can rock on screen and make the soundtrack hot,
expressing the high standards for the role.
Foxx’s top choice was Lauryn Hill, known for her powerhouse vocals with the Fugees. However, reaching her proved challenging. After multiple attempts to contact her at concerts, Hill became wary of Foxx’s persistence, reportedly telling him,
You know, you’re making me nervous.
Turning Toward Aaliyah as a Potential Star
After difficulties contacting Hill, Foxx shifted his attention to Aaliyah, a rising R&B singer and actress who had recently appeared in the Jet Li action film Romeo Must Die. Foxx enthusiastically said,
She’s sexy. She can sing. She can act. Right now I’d say she’s my number one choice,
highlighting her diverse talents and appeal.
Aaliyah acknowledged awareness of the project and expressed openness to collaborating with Foxx, though she had not received a script at that time. Tragically, she passed away in a plane crash less than a year after discussing the musical remake, putting her potential involvement to rest.
Long Road to the Latest Adaptation
The concept of remaking A Star Is Born lingered in Hollywood for nearly twenty years, with various stars like Jennifer Lopez, Will Smith, Beyoncé, and Clint Eastwood, among others, linked to the project at different points. The story finally saw a contemporary reinterpretation in 2018, starring Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper, which found both critical and commercial success.
Foxx’s early ambition to fuse music and film in a revitalized version of A Star Is Born underscores how lasting the story’s appeal is, and how the casting of key performers can profoundly influence such projects. His desire to incorporate dynamic singers like Lauryn Hill and Aaliyah showed foresight in blending cinematic storytelling with popular music, an approach that continues to shape musicals on screen today.
