Keke Palmer Opens Up: “Almost Sure” She’s Asexual

Actress and musician Keke Palmer recently spoke openly about her sexual identity, revealing that she is “almost sure” she identifies as asexual. On February 15, the 32-year-old star of One of Them Days reflected on her Valentine’s Day experience with fans, sharing a candid and thoughtful message about her personal journey.

Accompanied by professional photos of herself dressed in a cream bustier and satin skirt, Palmer wrote, Chile, let’s talk about it,” inviting her followers into a more intimate conversation about love and identity.

Valentine’s Day Reflections and Asexual Identity

In her post, Palmer described how she spent Valentine’s Day surrounded by close family and friends, noting that no romantic encounters took place. She wrote,

“How was your Valentine’s Day? I spent mine with my mom, sister and son. Then went to a colleagues [sic] smashing birthday bash. Yea, I said smashing. Absolutely nothing romantic went down, crazy right! I’m so cute!”

She went on to explain how her understanding of her sexuality has evolved, nearly ten years after she first chose not to constrain herself with any specific label.

“I like no one and I’m almost 100% sure I’m asexual. I have no interest in anyone, but I wish I did,”

Palmer added, then encouraged fans to share their own Valentine’s Day stories in response.

Understanding Asexuality and Related Terms

The term “asexual” includes people who do not experience sexual attraction or have a desire for sexual intimacy. Within this broad spectrum are identities such as demisexuality, describing those who only feel sexual attraction after forming an emotional connection, and aromanticism, which refers to individuals who feel minimal romantic attraction to others.

Prominent figures like Alice Oseman, creator of Heartstopper, along with actress Michaela Coel and actor Tim Gunn, have publicly discussed their places on the asexual spectrum, contributing to greater awareness of diverse sexual identities.

Keke Palmer’s Past Comments on Sexuality

Palmer has addressed her fluid relationship with sexuality in the past. In 2017 on The Wendy Williams Show, when asked about her sexual orientation, she stated, “I like whoever loves me,” refusing to confine herself to any label at that time. She expressed,

“I’m the kind of person that at the end of the day, love is defined by the individual. What I feel today is not necessarily what I may feel five years from now. I don’t want to limit myself to one feeling or one idea of anything.”

Her reflections continued in 2023 when she accepted the Vanguard Award from the Los Angeles LGBT Center. At the event, Palmer shared,

“I’ve always been my own person. Sexuality and identity for me has always been confusion,”

and added,

“You know, it’s, ‘I never felt straight enough. I never felt gay enough. And I never felt woman enough. I never felt man enough.’ You know, I always felt like I was a little bit of everything.”

The Personal Significance and Public Reception

Palmer has described experiencing feelings for other women from a young age, further highlighting the complexity of her identity. Fans responded positively to her honest conversation about romance and self-discovery. Notably, her One of Them Days co-star and musician SZA commented,

“Ur actually WAY too advanced for anyone I could even think of.”

By sharing her experience with the Keke Palmer asexual identity, the actress helps to shed light on a less commonly discussed sexual orientation, opening space for greater understanding and acceptance. Her openness may encourage others to explore their own identities more openly and honestly.
