Chris Hemsworth Teases Unique New Direction for Thor

Chris Hemsworth has assured fans that his role as Thor will continue to evolve within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), revealing plans to appear multiple more times. Speaking during an interview on SmartLess with co-host Sean Hayes, Hemsworth suggested that his future portrayal of the character will take on a distinct direction from previous outings. As anticipation builds for the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday this Christmas, Hemsworth’s comments hint that the God of Thunder’s journey is far from over.

Exploring Different Interpretations of Thor Across Films

Having played Thor in ten films, Hemsworth shared that the chance to explore various tonal styles has kept the role engaging. He contrasted his experience with those of other MCU actors, stating that many characters have maintained a fairly consistent tone throughout their appearances. In contrast, Hemsworth highlighted working with directors such as Taika Waititi, Kenneth Branagh, and the Russo brothers, all of whom brought distinctive styles to their respective Thor films.

“It’s been so much fun. And what I’ve really enjoyed it—unlike a lot of what the other characters that the [actors] were given, they have had to be pretty consistent— whereas working with Taika Waititi on his films versus Kenneth Branagh with those films and then with the Russos, all [the films] had quite a different sort of tonal opinion,”

he said.

“But [the Russos] also let me try different things. It’s the same with my tattoos, I’d be getting really bored [with] the same thing and having a real need to kind of throw [the performance] in different directions.”

Anticipating a Bold New Phase for Thor’s Character

Hemsworth also revealed that he and Marvel president Kevin Feige have discussed pushing Thor’s character into new, unexpected territory. The audience’s expectations for dramatic developments have encouraged the creative team to consider innovative approaches to the character’s trajectory. Hemsworth expressed hope that their upcoming plans would once again deliver a fresh and distinctive portrayal.

“I was talking to Kevin Feige about it, and he said it’s cool because the audience now expects dramatic turns with the character… And whatever we do next—we’ve got some ideas to do something pretty unique again and hopefully be [different],”

Hemsworth stated.

Balancing Humor and Seriousness: Lessons from Past Films

The actor reflected on the tonal shifts Thor has undergone, particularly the changes introduced in Taika Waititi’s Ragnarok and later in Love and Thunder. While the lighter, comedic style of Ragnarok was widely appreciated, the more irreverent, Monty Python-inspired humor in Love and Thunder faced some backlash from fans. This reaction highlighted the challenge of navigating audience expectations while experimenting with the character.

“You do need to be careful… When we made ‘Ragnarok,’ it was quite a twist, with Taika’s [film]. And it was so fun. There was a huge appreciation for the shift. And then [with] ‘Love And Thunder,’ it was kind of like a Monty Python sketch, and we took the piss probably a little much, and then there was some backlash. There was this real kind of, ‘Why is he a goofball and why is it like this?’ And, [audiences] violently offended and we were like, ‘Oh, we’re just having fun or trying to try something different,’”

Hemsworth explained.

Upcoming Appearances and the Future of Thor

Chris Hemsworth’s Thor will return in Avengers: Doomsday, set to premiere in cinemas on December 18th. His involvement in further MCU projects, including Avengers: Secret Wars and potentially a fifth Thor installment, signals ongoing developments. With new creative directions planned, Hemsworth’s portrayal promises to continue surprising and engaging audiences. As the franchise progresses, fans can expect Thor to evolve in ways that reflect both past successes and new experimental ambitions.
