The Copenhagen International Documentary Film Festival, known as CPH:DOX, has announced its complete program for the 23rd edition, scheduled for March 11-22, 2026. The event will showcase a range of urgent global topics, featuring French actress Juliette Binoche’s directorial debut, drawing attention to the festival’s artistic exploration led by Juliette Binoche CPH DOX participation.
Juliette Binoche’s Directorial Debut and Special Festival Appearance
Among the film personalities attending, Juliette Binoche will present her first film as a director, In-I in Motion, and participate in a special event titled An Evening With Juliette Binoche. Alongside her, notable figures such as HBO’s cult favorite John Wilson and respected documentarian Louis Theroux will join the festival, bringing diverse perspectives to audiences in the Danish capital.
Thematic Focus on Global Conflict and Technological Change
Niklas Engstrøm, the festival’s artistic director, described the 2026 edition as a wide-ranging examination of a rapidly shifting world. He noted,
“From the Arctic to the Amazon, Gaza to Greenland and Kyiv to the Kremlin, CPH:DOX 2026 spans the full alphabet of a world in flux. The festival converges urgent reports from the world’s geopolitical boiling points with critical inquiries into AI disruption, Big Tech, oligarchs, and the battle for freedom of expression, while also tackling the accelerating climate crisis, neurotechnology’s ethical frontiers, and the fragile state of democracy itself.”
Engstrøm emphasizes the festival’s commitment to addressing major political, social, and environmental challenges.
Exploration of Human Rights and Technological Impact
The festival program centers on two key themes. The first, Right Here, Right Now, investigates human and civil rights struggles amid increasing threats to freedoms. As described by the festival, it focuses on
“a world where rules and freedoms are increasingly contested.”
The second theme, Brain Waves, delves into the workings of the brain, consciousness, and the effects of emerging technologies, noted to
“reshape human experience.”
Documentary Film’s Role in a Distracted World
Engstrøm concluded on the significance of documentaries today, stating,
“In a world spinning out of control, where speed and distraction dominate, documentary film is more essential than ever – because it slows us down, helps us see complexity, and allows us to grasp what matters. At CPH:DOX 2026, we take a double look: at the outer world order, under political and social upheaval, and at the inner world order of our brains, reshaped by AI, algorithms, and neurotechnology.”
This reflects the festival’s dual focus on external global issues and internal human cognition reshaped by technology.
Music Documentaries and Live Experience Program
CPH:DOX 2026 will also feature an extensive music documentary selection paired with live events. This year’s lineup includes intimate portraits of artists such as Nick Cave, Marianne Faithfull, Judas Priest, Boy George & Culture Club, Sun Ra Arkestra, and Danish musician Lydmor. The festival’s offerings extend to include genre-focused films spotlighting funk, folk music, Arctic traditions, postcolonial Irish music, and talented classical child musicians, appealing to a broad range of film and music enthusiasts.
