The much-anticipated sequel to the 2023 film Plane, titled Ship, has officially been canceled following a last-minute withdrawal by Gerard Butler. The announcement came in early 2026, ending hopes for a continuation of the story centered around the character Louis Gaspare. This news highlights the unexpected challenges facing the Gerard Butler Plane sequel cancellation.
Why the Plane Sequel Won’t Move Forward, According to Mike Colter
Mike Colter, who was set to reprise his role as Louis Gaspare in Ship, revealed the cancellation during an interview at Fan Expo Vancouver with The Direct. The project was gearing up for production, but unexpectedly fell apart due to Butler’s decision to exit as both lead actor and producer. Colter explained that Butler pulled out just two weeks before filming, leaving the cast and crew uncertain about the future.
It just, last-minute, Gerard decided he didn’t want to go forward with it, and there wasn’t a lot of discussion about it,
Colter said.
He just… two weeks out, he pulled out, and we were sort of left trying to figure out what to do. And eventually, that dissolved.
The actor expressed his own disappointment but noted he was excited about the script, which was designed to directly continue from where the first film ended, especially addressing the fate of his character. He shared,
The script. Basically picking up where we left off, what happened to that character, and how’d he get off the island. That was where we were gonna go with it. So, I was excited about it,
Mike Colter added.

At present, no alternative plans have been announced to revive the sequel or replace Butler’s involvement.
Background on the Film Plane and the Proposed Sequel
Plane centers on a commercial pilot who must make an emergency landing on a Philippine island caught in a war zone, leading to a tense battle for survival. Released in January 2023, the film exceeded expectations by earning over $74 million worldwide against a modest $25 million budget. Critics and audiences largely responded positively to its suspenseful plot and performances.
The canceled sequel, Ship, was rumored to follow Louis Gaspare escaping the Philippines via a cargo vessel heading to South Africa. Along the journey, he was expected to uncover a human trafficking operation, adding another layer of thriller elements. However, whether Butler’s character would have appeared in a cameo or more substantial role remained unclear before the cancellation.
Impact and Future Prospects After the Sequel’s Withdrawal
The abrupt end to this project marks a significant setback for fans anticipating the continuation of the Plane universe. Gerard Butler’s departure has cast doubt over the franchise’s viability, raising questions about whether the story will ever return to the big screen. With no current plans to move forward, the sequel’s cancellation leaves the unresolved cliffhanger from the first film hanging indefinitely.
As key figures like Mike Colter and Gerard Butler remain silent on any new developments, the film community watches closely to see if another attempt to revive the concept will emerge. Meanwhile, the original Plane retains its status as a successful standalone thriller that surprised audiences and critics alike.
