Timothée Chalamet has shared new details about the upcoming release of Dune 3, describing it as the “eeriest” installment in Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi saga. Scheduled to hit theaters this December, the film is set to explore bold new directions in the story of Paul Atreides, with Chalamet revealing how he approached the role during this final chapter.
Chalamet Reflects on Tone and Influences in Dune 3
In a discussion with Matthew McConaughey, Chalamet compared the ambitious tone of Dune 3 to legendary cinematic performances, though he quickly revised his statement with a laugh.
“What I think you see at the end of the second one, and across the third one, is yourself in Interstellar and Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight and Marlon Brando in Apocalypse Now and stuff like that,”
he said before adding,
“Actually, wait, let me rephrase all of that! Hold up. I cannot put myself in that same boat,”
and chuckling further, remarked,
“Let’s just say, it’s these big movies where you could sneak in something. A curveball.”
This exchange highlights the complexity and elevates expectations for the film’s tone, which Chalamet emphasized as darker and more experimental than previous installments.
Collaboration with Denis Villeneuve and Creative Freedom
Chalamet described his ongoing work with director Villeneuve as exceptionally smooth, with a strong rhythm found on set that allowed experimentation. He referred to Dune 3 as a significant creative risk.
“It’s the eeriest one. It’s a big swing,”
he said, hinting at a departure from familiar storytelling toward a more unsettling atmosphere for Paul Atreides’s journey.
The actor also acknowledged Oscar Isaac’s portrayal of Leto Atreides in the first film as a major inspiration. Isaac’s approach to the role was distinctive and elevated, which gave Chalamet the confidence to push his own performance further.
“He treated it in a Shakespearean way — to play it heightened and not really care about it being heightened,”
Chalamet explained, describing how Isaac’s willingness to take risks encouraged him to embrace even greater liberty in Dune 3.
Adjusting to Franchise Scale and Embracing the Film’s Scope
Coming from smaller, more naturalistic films like Beautiful Boy and Call Me by Your Name, Chalamet admitted that the vast scale of Dune presented challenges early on. However, for the third film, he welcomed the opportunity to explore the world-building and creative freedom the franchise offers.
“All the great shit you see on screen is from freedom of movement and freedom of choice,”
he said, reflecting on how this freedom shaped his work and the overall production.
With these insights, audiences can anticipate a distinctive and bold conclusion to the trilogy. Timothée Chalamet Dune 3 promises to deliver a unique tone, enriched performances, and innovative storytelling when it opens in theaters this December.
