Pedro Pascal on Mandalorian Future: Bo-Katan’s Star Wars Rise

The Mandalorian, with Pedro Pascal leading as Din Djarin, concluded its third season having shifted its narrative focus within the Star Wars galaxy. While Din Djarin reunited with Grogu, now officially called Din Grogu, much of the final season’s emotional and thematic weight moved towards Katee Sackhoff’s character Bo-Katan Kryze. This transition was reflected in Bo-Katan becoming central to the storyline by reclaiming the Darksaber and preparing to lead a fractured Mandalorian people into a new era.

Bo-Katan’s rise to prominence came after a period of isolation, having lost the Darksaber and the leadership of Mandalore. With the Armorer’s blessing, she now stands in a position to unite her people. Although Pedro Pascal remains the primary face of the series, much of his recent involvement has consisted of voice acting, with Brendan Wayne and Lateef Crowder donning the Mandalorian armor on set for physical performances.

Pedro Pascal’s Expanding Career and Mandalorian Availability

Pascal’s growing schedule, including his major roles in HBO’s The Last of Us and debut as Reed Richards in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has raised questions about his long-term role in Star Wars. Lucasfilm seemed to acknowledge this shift; during the third season, executive producer and director Rick Famuyiwa asked,

Who is the Mandalorian at this point?

suggesting an evolving identity for the central character beyond Din Djarin’s story.

The upcoming theatrical project, The Mandalorian and Grogu, set for release in 2026 and directed by Jon Favreau, will feature Pascal reprising his role as Din Djarin alongside Jeremy Allen White as Rotta the Hutt and Sigourney Weaver as Colonel Ward. Din Grogu will return as well. However, despite Bo-Katan’s important role in Season 3, Katee Sackhoff has not been confirmed for this film.

The Broader Star Wars Context and Bo-Katan’s Position

The latest trailers for The Mandalorian and Grogu showcased a more cinematic approach to the Mando-Verse, introducing characters like Garazeb “Zeb” Orrelios, played by Steven Blum. Zeb’s backstory is rooted in Star Wars Rebels, where he was a key member of the Ghost crew alongside Hera Syndulla, Sabine Wren, and Ezra Bridger.

However, the trio of Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Natasha Liu Bordizzo, and Eman Esfandi—who portray these characters in live-action—are unlikely to appear in the upcoming film due to commitments in Ahsoka, where they face Grand Admiral Thrawn, played by Lars Mikkelsen. This interconnectedness reflects Lucasfilm’s broader narrative strategy spanning multiple series and timelines.

Since The Mandalorian’s third season finished, the Star Wars timeline on Disney+ has expanded significantly, covering eras including the New Republic and the High Republic. Projects like Ahsoka, The Acolyte, and Skeleton Crew have extended the story beyond Din Djarin’s arc, weaving together characters and events post-Episode VI.

Katee Sackhoff’s Reflections on Continuing Star Wars Roles

In 2023, Sackhoff commented cautiously on the possibility of returning to the franchise in a planned crossover film by Dave Filoni, saying,

If my phone rings, great; if not, they know how much we all want to be a part of it.

More recently, at Fan Expo Vancouver, she reaffirmed that Bo-Katan’s story is far from finished:

Always! She’s not dead. She ain’t going anywhere,

adding,

She can’t, because she’s based off Dave Filoni’s wife. So I have job security forever. Anne [Convery] would be so pissed.

Despite her enthusiasm, identifying the exact timing or form of Bo-Katan’s next live-action appearance remains uncertain, partly due to shifting priorities within Lucasfilm’s Star Wars projects.

Current and Future Star Wars Projects Impacting Bo-Katan’s Role

Lucasfilm’s slate announced at Star Wars Celebration Europe 2023 outlined several upcoming theatrical projects including a New Jedi Order film starring Daisy Ridley’s Rey, directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, and a film by Dave Filoni planned to connect storylines from The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka, and Skeleton Crew. This film is expected to feature Grand Admiral Thrawn as a primary antagonist.

However, recent developments reveal considerable changes. Kathleen Kennedy is stepping down as Lucasfilm President, to be succeeded by Dave Filoni and Lynwen Brennan as co-CEOs. Meanwhile, Shawn Levy’s Star Wars: Starfighter is fast-tracked for a 2027 release. Insiders indicate that the Mando-Verse theatrical film could be scrapped or restructured as a limited Disney+ series, and the New Jedi Order movie may be merged into Simon Kinberg’s new Star Wars trilogy.

The Mandalorian and Grogu film, directed by Jon Favreau, is set to premiere first in May, before these developments further unfold.

The Evolving Mandalorian Narrative and Bo-Katan’s Emerging Leadership

Season 3 of The Mandalorian effectively served as a narrative bridge. Din Djarin’s storyline became more intimate, focused on his relationship with Grogu, while Bo-Katan moved into a leadership role with the Darksaber reclaimed and Mandalore’s future in her hands. This development prepares Bo-Katan to take a more pivotal place in the franchise should further Mandalorian stories continue.

With Pascal’s increasing commitments outside Star Wars, Lucasfilm appears to be creating a pathway for Sackhoff’s Bo-Katan to assume greater prominence. Her growing presence in Disney+ content and confirmed role in Star Wars Zero Company suggest she is becoming a foundational figure in the post-Episode VI era of the series.
