Denzel Washington’s Crime Thriller Becomes Streaming Sensation

The crime thriller Highest 2 Lowest, starring Denzel Washington, has become a streaming success on Apple TV months after its 2025 release, despite underperforming in theaters. The film’s growing popularity online positions it as a notable example of how streaming platforms can revive films that falter at the box office.

According to FlixPatrol, the movie has steadily climbed the Apple TV Top 10 Movies chart in the United States over the past week, moving from the lowest position at number 10 to as high as number 4. Globally, Highest 2 Lowest holds an average ranking of number 5 on Apple TV, following behind major 2025 titles such as F1, Eternity, The Gorge, and Fountain of Youth.

A Modern Remake of Akira Kurosawa’s Classic Thriller

Highest 2 Lowest is an English-language adaptation of Akira Kurosawa’s acclaimed 1963 film High and Low, which was itself adapted from Ed McBain’s 1959 novel King’s Ransom. The remake, directed by Spike Lee with a screenplay by Alan Fox, shifts the setting to the gritty urban landscape of present-day New York City.

Denzel Washington portrays David King, a powerful music executive known for his exceptional ear in the industry. When King faces a kidnapping and ransom scheme, he confronts morally complex decisions that put his life and values at stake. This project marks the fifth time Washington and Lee have worked together, reuniting for the first time since their 2006 film Inside Man. Their previous collaborations include He Got Game (1998), Malcolm X (1992), and Mo’ Better Blues (1990).

Despite the reunion of this successful actor-director duo, the movie’s theatrical release failed to attract audiences, with A24 and Apple Studios opting not to release official box office figures amid low turnout. However, its addition to Apple TV has transformed the film into a steady performer on the streaming platform.

Upcoming Projects Extend Washington’s Cinematic Range

Denzel Washington’s future projects showcase a diverse slate, beginning with the heist film Here Comes the Flood, directed by Fernando Meirelles and co-starring Robert Pattinson and Daisy Edgar-Jones. Filming concluded in January 2026, with locations spanning Jersey City, Hoboken, Newark, Atlanta, and New York City.

In addition, Washington is slated to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Black Panther 3. He confirmed his involvement in late 2024, and director Ryan Coogler announced the film as his next venture, aiming for a 2028 release window.

The actor also announced plans to continue the Equalizer series with two more installments, partnering again with director Antoine Fuqua. Together, they are developing a Netflix project centered on the legendary warrior Hannibal.

Cast Highlights and Film Availability

The cast of Highest 2 Lowest features Denzel Washington as David King and Jeffrey Wright playing Paul Christopher. The film’s presence on Apple TV ensures accessibility to a broad streaming audience.

Highest 2 Lowest continues to demonstrate how digital platforms can reshape a film’s journey, allowing a movie initially overlooked in cinemas to reach viewers and gain momentum well after its initial debut.
