Sean Astin took the stage at the Actor Awards Sunday evening, marking his first appearance as president of SAG-AFTRA, the primary actors’ union. Known for his iconic roles as Mikey in The Goonies and Sam in The Lord of the Rings series, Astin used the occasion to honor his family’s deep ties to the acting community and their shared involvement in the union.
Tribute to Family Members with Strong Union Connections
In his speech, Astin paid heartfelt tribute to several relatives who have contributed significantly both on screen and behind the scenes. He acknowledged his father, John Astin, who originated the role of Gomez Addams in The Addams Family at age 95.
Special mentions to my father, John Astin, 95 years old. He originated the role of Gomez Addams in The Addams Family,
Astin said.
Acknowledging his late mother, Patty Duke—an Academy Award winner and former SAG-AFTRA president—he also recognized his brother Mackenzie, currently working early hours in Atlanta, and his daughter Ali, whose film is playing in theaters this weekend.
To my late mother, Academy Award winner, and former president of our union, Patty Duke. To my brother, Mackenzie, who has an early call time tomorrow, shooting a show in Atlanta; and to my daughter, Ali, we currently have a movie out this weekend in actual theaters.

He emphasized the union membership spanning five family members and joked about the experience at home with his supportive wife of 35 years, Christine.
That is, count ’em, five members of the union in our family. And if you want to know what it’s like to live with that, you can ask my patient, beautiful wife of 35 years, Christine.
Besides Ali, Astin also mentioned his daughters Elizabeth and Isabella, playfully describing their roles as unpaid assistants who handle self-tape reviews, character notes, and equipment setup during auditions.
Awesome free labor! he quipped.
Leadership Role and Union Challenges Ahead
Astin assumed the SAG-AFTRA presidency in September after winning the election, stepping into the position previously held by Fran Drescher for four years. The election also resulted in Michelle Hurd, known for Law & Order: SVU and Star Trek: Picard, becoming the Secretary-Treasurer. Astin’s term is set for two years, during which he faces ongoing challenges related to union negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP).
Speaking to the crowd of union members and nominees, Astin reflected on the solidarity that helped the members endure difficult times and emphasized the ongoing efforts to secure a fair agreement.
Solidarity carried us through a very hard time. We are back in negotiations with the AMPTP,
he said.
Everyone is working very hard to achieve a solid deal.
He added,
What we’re doing is giving our members a fighting chance to provide for themselves and for their families, and allow us all to work in an environment that respects our dignity and the lives and health of our colleagues.
Significance of Astin’s Role for Actors and the Union’s Future
Astin’s speech underscored his commitment to the welfare of union members at a time of negotiation and change within the entertainment industry. By honoring his family’s legacy and highlighting collective perseverance, he positioned himself as a leader dedicated to protecting actors’ rights and working conditions. The ongoing discussions with the AMPTP will be pivotal in shaping the working environment for thousands of performers across film and television.
