Sean Patrick Astin (né Duke; born February 25, 1971) is an American actor and trade union leader who serves as the 4th national president of SAG-AFTRA. He began his career as a child actor, making his film debut as Mikey Walsh in The Goonies (1985), and has since built a reputation across film, television, and voice acting. Sean Astin is widely recognized for playing Samwise Gamgee in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy, a role that cemented his place in popular cinema.

Sean Patrick Astin was born on February 25, 1971, in Santa Monica, California. His mother was Academy Award-winning actress Patty Duke, and his biological father was later confirmed to be writer and music promoter Michael Tell. At the time of his birth, it was widely reported that entertainer Desi Arnaz Jr. was his father, a misunderstanding that persisted for years. In 1972, when Patty Duke married actor John Astin, the young Sean famously called John “Daddy” during the wedding ceremony, prompting the officiating priest to declare, “Well, that about does it!” John Astin subsequently adopted Sean, and the name Astin has stayed with him throughout his life.

Sean Astin married Christine Harrell on July 11, 1992, and the couple has three daughters. Christine Harrell held the Miss Indiana Teen USA title in 1984. One of their daughters, Ali, made a small cameo in The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King as Elanor Gamgee, Astin’s onscreen daughter. Astin is a lifelong supporter of the Democratic Party and has campaigned for several presidential candidates, including John Kerry, Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden, and Kamala Harris. In July 2025, Astin declared his candidacy to succeed Fran Drescher as president of SAG-AFTRA and was elected on September 12, 2025, receiving 79.25% of the vote for a two-year term. His mother, Patty Duke, had been elected president of the Screen Actors Guild forty years earlier.
