Demi Lovato and Keke Palmer opened up about their challenges as teenagers involved with significantly older men during a recent episode of Palmer’s podcast, Baby, This is Keke Palmer. Speaking candidly, the singers revealed how their youthful relationships with older partners shaped their early lives.
Palmer shared that she began dating at 15 and was struck by the age gap between herself and her boyfriend at the time.
“I’m 15, why is my boyfriend 20?”
she asked, expressing confusion. Lovato responded with her own perspective, “Why was my boyfriend 30?” highlighting the even wider age difference she experienced.
The Reality Behind Relationships with Older Men
Neither woman specified the names of their teenage partners during the conversation, but Lovato’s past relationship with Wilmer Valderrama is widely known and believed to have started when she was around 17 and he was 29. Lovato’s song “29,” which she discusses in the podcast, is said to reflect that experience, and she suggests Palmer can relate to such challenges.
Palmer also acknowledged Hilary Duff’s song Mature, which explores Duff’s own experiences of dating an older man as a teenager, drawing parallels among young performers navigating similar situations.
Despite the initial acceptance they may have felt at the time, both singers expressed discomfort when reflecting on these relationships as adults. Lovato admitted,
“But then you look back in hindsight. When I turned 30, I was like, that’s not okay.”
Recognizing Exploitation and Its Impact
Palmer agreed with Lovato’s feelings and described a sense of mental strain upon realizing the true nature of what had occurred.
“The moment when you realize, and you get to the age of a lot of people that were around you and doing stuff, it’s almost a mental break that can happen because you realize you were taken advantage of. Oh, I was being exploited,”
she explained.
She elaborated on the mindset she had as a teenager balancing her career and personal life:
“At 15, I’m thinking, like, my boyfriend’s older because I’m doing an older job. I’m doing a bunch of things, and this is the way that it is and it seemed normal in my mind.”
Significance of Their Reflections and Future Considerations
This discussion sheds light on the pressures and complexities child stars face when navigating relationships that involve unequal power dynamics. Their honest reflections highlight how early relationships with older partners can have lasting emotional consequences.
Palmer’s openness on her podcast adds to ongoing conversations about protecting young artists and supporting those who may have been exploited during formative years. Meanwhile, Lovato’s recognition of her experiences in her music further amplifies awareness about these issues.
