Nicole Kidman Says AMC Ad Paycheck Was Zero: Here’s Why

Nicole Kidman revealed that her involvement in the widely celebrated Nicole Kidman AMC ad was driven not by financial gain but by her passion for movies and a desire to support the struggling theater industry. She explained this during her appearance on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon, emphasizing that the project’s success was unexpected and fueled by genuine intentions.

Kidman said,

“The weirdest thing about that… I had no idea that thing was gonna work,”

and added,

“We did it out of the purest of intentions.”

Her commitment was rooted in a need to help cinemas weather the difficulties brought by the 2021 pandemic lockdown.

Behind the Scenes: Bringing the Creative Team Together

The actress played an active role in assembling the creative talent for the ad, personally recruiting writer Bill Ray and director Jeff Cronenweth to collaborate on the project. She recalled reaching out to colleagues from her film Being the Ricardos during the height of COVID-19 restrictions, explaining,

“It was during COVID when we did it, and the crew that I was working with on Being the Ricardos, I said, ‘Would you guys be willing to do this?’”

and added,

“And Jeff Cronenweth, who was the DP, he said, ‘I’ll direct it.’ [I] called in all these favors.”

Remarkably, Kidman confirmed that everyone involved participated without pay. “We did it for nothing,” she said, “And then it went off.” The risk-free nature of the ad did not hinder its impact, as it quickly became one of the most talked-about campaigns of 2021.

The Enduring Impact of the AMC Theater Advertisement

The Nicole Kidman AMC ad features the actress walking slowly down the aisles of an empty theater while delivering a memorable monologue, an image that resonated widely with audiences. Since its launch, it sparked numerous recreations by fans, inspired Halloween costumes, and generated a variety of parodies and unofficial merchandise. The campaign’s cultural footprint shows how a simple idea, rooted in sincere effort, can capture public imagination.

Kidman has embraced the viral attention despite occasionally feeling self-conscious. In 2024, during a conversation with Elle, she shared appreciation for one particular subculture’s tribute to the ad. She said,

“My dream will be to be onstage doing it with a drag queen. I’ve got to be able to do that at some point.”

Her fondness for drag queens reinterpreting the ad reflects her open and supportive attitude toward the many ways audiences celebrate cinema.

Personal Connection to Cinema and Commitment to Its Future

Kidman expressed how deeply personal her efforts to preserve movie theaters are, recalling fond memories of escaping into cinemas during her youth. She reflected,

“I’ve had the best experiences in cinema,”

and shared,

“I’d pretend I was going to school; I’d forge a note, and I’d go and sit in a movie theater. That’s a safe haven for me, so the idea of those not existing—that’s just not part of the equation in my lifetime.”

The thought of losing such places of refuge drives her advocacy.

Her readiness to face ridicule for the sake of cinema’s survival underscores her dedication. Kidman concluded with a mix of resolve and humor, stating, “I’ll do whatever it takes,” she said with a laugh.
