The event drew hundreds of fans, many dressed in costumes inspired by the story’s 1920s and 1930s setting, celebrating the city that has long been central to the series.

A Night of Celebration and Nostalgia on the Red Carpet

Joining Murphy were notable actors Tim Roth and Rebecca Ferguson, alongside Barry Keoghan and rock band Fontaines D.C. The premiere also featured appearances by Premier League footballers, creating a vibrant atmosphere filled with excitement. Fans enjoyed interactive elements such as a mechanical bull adorned with the show’s signature flat cap, providing unique photo opportunities during the event’s pyrotechnics and live music.

Cillian Murphy Reflects on Birmingham’s Role in the Story

Murphy expressed a deep connection to Birmingham, affectionately nicknamed Brum, noting its significance to the series’ narrative. He told AFP that the city was

the only place it could ever happen,

highlighting Birmingham’s lasting presence as a central ‘character’ throughout both the six seasons and the new film.

Sharing insights on casting Barry Keoghan, Murphy said,

I sent [Barry Keoghan] a text on Father’s Day… and asked him if he wanted to be in it. We know each other… he’s just unbelievable on camera,

revealing a personal approach to involving new talent.

The Film’s War-Time Setting and New Characters

Written by creator Steven Knight, the movie is set during World War II, continuing the story of Thomas Shelby’s return from exile amid upheaval caused by his estranged son, Duke. Knight explained that the wartime backdrop amplifies the intense, often reckless behavior of the characters. He said,

In that time, when the bombs are falling, people become very hedonistic because they don’t know if they’re going to be alive the next day… the Peaky Blinders ethos becomes a general ethos.

Director Tom Harper added that positioning Shelby in the WWII era was fitting given the character’s past trauma from World War I, enhancing the dramatic tension characteristic of the series.

The cast includes Tim Roth as Beckett and Rebecca Ferguson as Kaulo, while Packy Lee, known for his role as Johnny Dogs, reflected on his long involvement with the show:

It’s been almost 14 years of my life playing the same character! I’ve enjoyed every minute of it.

Anticipation Builds Ahead of Film Release

Murphy admitted he has not yet fully come to terms with the story’s end, saying,

I think it’ll take a bit of time for me, you know.

The film is scheduled for cinematic release on Friday, March 15, followed by streaming availability on Netflix starting March 20, allowing audiences worldwide to experience the conclusion of this beloved saga.
