Netflix has completed the acquisition of InterPositive, the AI company founded by Ben Affleck, for an undisclosed amount. The Oscar-winning actor, director, and screenwriter established the startup in 2022 to improve postproduction workflows in film and television. Affleck had initially been cautious about AI but has grown to appreciate its role in creative industries.

From Skepticism to Embracing AI in Filmmaking

Affleck had previously expressed doubts about AI’s ability to contribute meaningfully to film creation. In a conversation with podcaster Joe Rogan, he mentioned that he did not believe AI could generate significant scripts or entire movies independently. Despite these early reservations, Affleck revealed that he now views AI as “a really meaningful innovation” after personally witnessing its practical applications.

How InterPositive Enhances Film Editing

InterPositive distinguishes itself by focusing on postproduction rather than video generation tools like Google’s Veo3 or OpenAI’s Sora. The startup’s technology is trained on specific footage from productions, known as dailies, to address common challenges such as reframing shots, correcting lighting errors, and digitally removing stunt wires. Affleck explained,

“not about text prompting or generating something from nothing.”

The AI assists in maintaining editorial consistency and adhering to cinematic rules, even when dealing with missing or imperfect shots. Affleck added,

“We also built in restraints to protect creative intent, so the tools are designed for responsible exploration while keeping creative decisions in the hands of artists,”

highlighting the startup’s focus on supporting, not replacing, human creativity.

Hollywood’s Growing Acceptance of Artificial Intelligence

The entertainment sector is increasingly open to integrating AI technologies for storytelling and production. This reflects a notable shift from prior concerns about AI threatening creative jobs and intellectual property. For example, Disney announced plans to permit OpenAI’s use of characters from franchises like Star Wars, Pixar, and Marvel in its Sora AI video generator.

Bela Bajaria, Netflix’s chief content officer, commented on the acquisition, stating,

“We believe new tools should expand creative freedom, not constrain it or replace the work of writers, directors, actors, and crews.”

Affleck’s Role Moving Forward and Industry Context

Alongside the acquisition, Affleck will join Netflix as a senior advisor, contributing his expertise to the company’s evolving content strategies. This deal follows Netflix’s recent withdrawal from an $82.7 billion bid to acquire Warner Bros Discovery’s studio and streaming assets, which were overtaken by Paramount Skydance’s offer.
