Ryan Coogler Shares Filmmaking Lesson Learned from Octavia Spencer

Ryan Coogler revealed an important filmmaking lesson he gained while collaborating with Academy Award winner Octavia Spencer on his 2013 debut film, Fruitvale Station. In a recent conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Coogler acknowledged how working with Spencer reshaped his method of directing actors.

A Turning Point During a Challenging Scene

Coogler recounted a specific scene from Fruitvale Station when he initially tried to control Spencer’s performance too tightly. Struggling to get the right take, he micromanaged her until she requested some freedom to interpret the role herself.

“I was trying to direct her too much,”

Coogler said.

Granting Spencer this space resulted in a powerful, natural take that made it directly into the final cut of the movie.

“It was perfect. It went straight into the movie,”

he added.

Lasting Impact on Coogler’s Later Projects

This experience with Spencer left a profound mark on Coogler’s filmmaking style, influencing how he works with actors across subsequent projects. He noted that the lesson continues to resonate deeply through his creative process, from performances by Angela Bassett in Wakanda Forever to those in Michael B. Jordan’s Sinners.

“I think about Octavia every time I’m on set,”

Coogler shared, adding that

“there is a direct line from that to a line reading from Angela Bassett in Wakanda Forever, to basically every performance in Sinners.”

The Significance of Collaborative Trust in Filmmaking

This shift toward trusting actors more fully reflects a broader lesson in collaboration and artistic freedom, key elements that have helped shape Coogler’s career. By learning to step back and allow his performers room to breathe, he has enhanced the authenticity and emotional power of his films, which may continue to influence his future work.
