James Mangold’s Star Wars Movie Reportedly Dead, Fans React

James Mangold‘s highly anticipated Star Wars film, originally titled Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi, appears to be stalled indefinitely, sparking concern among fans. Announced two years ago by former Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy, the project was set to explore the origins of the Jedi Order around 25,000 years before the main saga. Despite early enthusiasm, recent reports suggest the movie is no longer moving forward.

Developments and Insider Reports

Earlier this year, Kathleen Kennedy praised the script developed by Mangold and co-writer Beau Willimon, describing it as “incredible” and “definitely breaking the mold.” However, she admitted the project was “really on the back burner.” Now, industry insider Jeff Sneider has indicated that insiders believe the film is effectively dead. He shared,

“I can’t say that conclusively, but it doesn’t sound good. I think Mangold is focused on that Timothée Chalamet heist movie is what I think. I think ‘Swamp Thing’ could be after that.”

Sneider’s comments followed rumors circulating on social media that Dave Filoni may be considering canceling the film entirely.

Original Vision and Context of ‘Dawn of the Jedi’

James Mangold previously expressed his commitment to creating something original and ambitious with this Star Wars installment. The story was expected to delve into the earliest era of the franchise, examining the Jedi’s beginnings long before any existing Star Wars films. If successfully brought to life, this concept had potential to offer a fresh and captivating addition to the Star Wars universe. Yet, uncertainty now clouds the project’s future.

Mangold’s Current Focus and Future Prospects

Currently, Mangold is enjoying recognition for his biopic about Bob Dylan, A Complete Unknown. He is also preparing to direct his next film, High Side, which stars Timothée Chalamet and is expected to begin filming later this year if schedules permit. Given these new commitments, Mangold’s Star Wars project seems further deprioritized, which may explain the growing concerns among fans and insiders alike.
