Sylvester Stallone Joins as Executive Producer for John Rambo Prequel

Sylvester Stallone, the original actor behind John Rambo and a three-time Oscar nominee, has taken on the role of executive producer for the upcoming John Rambo prequel. The announcement marks Stallone’s first time producing a Rambo movie, which is the sixth installment in the franchise that began with 1982’s First Blood. The new film, currently shooting in Bangkok, Thailand, stars Noah Centineo as a younger Rambo and is directed by Jalmari Helander, known for Sisu.

Background on Stallone’s Involvement in the Rambo Franchise

Though Stallone is not acting in this prequel, he has historically been heavily involved with the Rambo series. He contributed as a writer on all five previous films and directed the 2008 movie titled Rambo. The franchise has earned more than $819 million worldwide at the box office, demonstrating its strong global appeal. Stallone’s executive producer role marks a new chapter in his connection with the franchise.

Production and Creative Team Behind the Prequel

The screenplay for the prequel was written by Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani. Producers on the project include Kevin King Templeton and Les Weldon, along with Jonathan Yunger representing Millennium Media, and Angela Russo-Otstot and Michael Disco for AGBO. Executive producers alongside Stallone include Anthony and Joe Russo, Trevor Short, Dallas Sonnier, and Amanda Presmyk for Bonfire Legend. The film is a collaborative production from Lionsgate, Millennium Media, Templeton Media, and AGBO, with Lionsgate handling distribution.

Supporting Cast and Franchise Expansion

In addition to Noah Centineo, the cast features Yao from Sinners, Jason Tobin known for A Thousand Blows, Quincy Isaiah of Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty, Jefferson White from Yellowstone, and Tayme Thapthimthong who appeared on The White Lotus. The film continues to expand the Rambo universe by exploring earlier events in the character’s story.

Lionsgate’s Broader Plans for Action Franchises

Last November, Lionsgate struck an agreement with Millennium Media to acquire rights for developing and producing all derivative works related to The Expendables franchise, as well as worldwide distribution rights for John Rambo. This deal positions the company to grow its portfolio of action-themed films and television properties based on popular franchises.

Industry Response to Stallone’s Return

Adam Fogelson, Chair of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, expressed enthusiasm about Stallone’s involvement, saying,

“Sylvester Stallone knows the character of John Rambo better than anyone, and Lionsgate has had the good fortune of partnering with Sly for more than 20 years on this legendary IP. His participation is the final, critical piece to John Rambo, and we’re thrilled to have his involvement.”
