Cillian Murphy Denies Voldemort Role Amid New Casting Rumors

Amid growing speculation, Cillian Murphy has denied claims that he will portray Lord Voldemort in HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter television adaptation. The series, aiming to faithfully adapt each of J.K. Rowling’s novels, is set to premiere in early 2027, and the question of who will play Voldemort remains a central point of interest.

Paul Bettany Also Weighs In on Casting Speculations

Paul Bettany, another actor rumored to take part in the series, spoke publicly at the Saturn Awards on March 8 to address casting chatter. When asked about the possibility of joining as Voldemort, he confirmed he had not been contacted by HBO. Bettany stated,

“I haven’t heard anything about that,”

and added,

“I mean I’m a big fan of the IP, and I’m a big fan of HBO, but nobody has called me up about it.”

Murphy Pays Tribute to Ralph Fiennes and Rejects the Role

Last year, reports circulated that Oscar-winner Cillian Murphy might succeed Ralph Fiennes as Voldemort, but Murphy dismissed those rumors during interviews. On the Happy Sad Confused podcast, he praised Fiennes as “an absolute acting legend.” He acknowledged,

“really hard to follow anything Ralph Fiennes does.”

Furthermore, Murphy told The Times that he was “categorically not” taking on the role.

Current Cast and Uncertainty About Voldemort’s Actor

The HBO adaptation has confirmed several significant roles already, with Dominic McLaughlin, Arabella Stanton, and Alastair Stout portraying Harry, Hermione, and Ron, respectively. John Lithgow will take on the role of Albus Dumbledore. However, the casting of Voldemort remains undecided, making it one of the most anticipated announcements for fans awaiting the show.

Significance of Casting Choices and What’s Next

The uncertainty surrounding Voldemort’s casting highlights the challenge of stepping into an iconic role made famous by Ralph Fiennes. As the series moves forward in production, fans and critics alike are watching closely to see who will embody the Dark Lord. The decisions HBO makes here will undoubtedly impact how this new adaptation is received once it premieres in 2027.
