Viola Davis Teams with Patterson on New Courtroom Thriller

Viola Davis has expanded her creative reach by co-authoring a courtroom thriller titled Judge Stone alongside bestselling writer James Patterson, set for release this month. The novel follows Judge Mary Stone, a Black circuit judge in a small Alabama town, as she oversees a highly divisive teenage abortion case that deeply affects the community. This subject is one that Davis revealed she had wanted to explore since her childhood, making the story a personal and meaningful effort.

A Partnership Born from Shared Vision

Davis described her collaboration with Patterson as serendipitous, with her agent reaching out to present the concept that immediately captured her interest. James Patterson explained the genesis of the novel:

I always had this idea about writing a real controversial, dramatic, emotional novel about a courtroom drama in a small town,

Patterson told People. Davis reflected on how the partnership influenced her perspective on storytelling, stating,

reinvigorated my faith in what could be created in this art form, I’m just going to say it, for Black women.

The Story’s Central Conflict and Character Depth

The core of Judge Stone is an emotionally charged and morally complex courtroom battle that challenges readers to consider themes of justice, authority, and community dynamics. The character of Judge Mary Stone manages courtroom proceedings with both strength and empathy, embodying a figure akin to a modern Atticus Finch, as suggested by Davis, who envisions this character reshaping how Black women are represented in legal fiction. This adds significant depth and nuance to the narrative’s human and judicial elements.

Blending Artistic Craft with Storytelling

Both Davis and Patterson emphasized their intent to focus on full-bodied characters who defy simple moral binaries, favoring storytelling that presents multifaceted human experiences. For Davis, this project integrates her acting expertise with fiction writing, bridging different creative disciplines. She remarked,

The foundation for me, collaborating on this book, is the very foundation of being an artist.

This connection highlights the continuity between performances on stage, screen, and the written word, making Judge Stone a unique addition to legal thriller literature. The book is currently available for pre-order.
