Harvey Weinstein reignited tensions with actress Gwyneth Paltrow during his first prison interview since his 2020 rape conviction was overturned by the New York Court of Appeals in 2024. Speaking from prison where he serves a 16-year sentence for a separate sexual assault conviction, Weinstein accused Paltrow of owing her career to him and of betraying him by publicizing allegations against him. These comments were made amidst the ongoing fallout of years of sexual misconduct claims that have shadowed Weinstein’s legacy.
Details of the Feud and Weinstein’s Perspective
Weinstein recounted the interactions allegedly leading to Paltrow’s accusations, asserting that she exaggerated the events. He claimed in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that after a meeting in which he suggested a massage, Paltrow refused and no physical contact was made.
“I don’t know what drove [Paltrow] to do what she did,”
he said.
“To make such a big deal over nothing. I walked out of a nice meeting with her and said, ‘How about a massage?’ And she just went, ‘No, I don’t think so.’ I got the message. I never put my hands on her.”
Weinstein also accused Paltrow of turning against him despite his support early in her career. He stated that she informed Brad Pitt, who reportedly warned Weinstein to avoid making Paltrow uncomfortable. According to Weinstein, Paltrow then went public in a way that he found disloyal.
“She told Brad Pitt. Brad Pitt came to me and said, ‘Don’t do anything like that with my girl.’ I said, ‘Don’t worry, Brad. I got it.’ But then Gwyneth goes on Howard Stern and The New York Times and makes a big deal about it all. She knows that nothing happened. But this person who was a friend, who owes her career to me, just stabs me in the back. She wanted to be part of the crowd. I won’t forgive her for that.”
Paltrow’s Allegations and Early Career Beginnings
Gwyneth Paltrow first came forward in 2017 during the surge of the #MeToo movement, sharing her experience of being summoned to Weinstein’s hotel room after being cast in the film Emma. She alleged that Weinstein suggested a massage and placed his hands on her when she was 22 years old, an incident she detailed publicly. Emma marked a significant milestone in Paltrow’s career, leading to more roles in films such as The Pallbearer, Sliding Doors, and Shakespeare in Love.

Paltrow also described Brad Pitt’s protective confrontation with Weinstein at a 1995 Broadway opening of Hamlet. She recounted Pitt telling Weinstein,
“If you ever make her feel uncomfortable again, I’ll kill you.”
On The Howard Stern Show, Paltrow praised Pitt’s defense, calling it a powerful use of his influence at a time before she had recognition or power.
“It was the equivalent of throwing him against the wall, energetically,”
she said.
“It was so fantastic because what he did was, he leveraged his fame and power to protect me at a time when I didn’t have fame or power yet.”
Weinstein’s Broader Denials and Claims Against Other Actresses
During the interview, Weinstein also targeted Rosanna Arquette and Angelina Jolie, alleging that they too exaggerated their accounts of him. He denied that he ever blackballed any actresses who refused his advances, claiming that just the threat of him was enough pressure in the industry.
“Absolutely not. I may be a tough guy, but I’m not deranged,”
Weinstein said.
“Just the threat of Harvey was enough — maybe more than enough. But it didn’t go to the point of blackballing anybody.”
He accused Paltrow, Arquette, and Jolie of seeking acceptance by “exaggerating” their stories and destroying his reputation.
“If the camera’s on, I’m just going to say Rosanna Arquette, Gwyneth Paltrow, Angelina Jolie — they just exaggerated,”
he claimed.
“They wanted to be part of the club. And they destroyed me.”
Angelina Jolie and Rosanna Arquette’s Accounts of Weinstein
Angelina Jolie alleged Weinstein made unwanted advances while she was working on Playing by Heart at age 21. She described the encounter as more than a mere pass, something she had to physically escape from, and she warned others about him afterward.
“It was beyond a pass, it was something I had to escape,”
Jolie shared in 2021.
“I stayed away and warned people about him. I remember telling Jonny, my first husband, who was great about it, to spread the word to other guys — don’t let girls go alone with him. I was asked to do ‘The Aviator,’ but I said no because he was involved. I never associated or worked with him again.”
Rosanna Arquette also detailed rejecting Weinstein’s advances at the Beverly Hills Hotel in the early 1990s where he allegedly awaited her in a bathrobe and tried to put her hand on his genitals. She indicated that refusing him had negative repercussions on her career and personal truth-telling.
“I was fortunate because I was not raped,”
Arquette said in 2026.
“But, boy, was it going there, and I paid a price for saying no, and later I paid a price for telling the truth.”
Weinstein’s Defense Against Other Allegations and Industry Claims
Weinstein also denied filmmaker Peter Jackson’s claim that he told Jackson to avoid working with actresses Ashley Judd and Mira Sorvino. He dismissed the allegations as lies rooted in personal resentment over disputes related to the Lord of the Rings series.
Peter Jackson is the worst,
Weinstein said.
“For him, it’s personal. He still resented me over what happened with [Miramax and] ‘Lord of the Rings.’ So as soon as he sees I’m down, he says that I ordered him not to work with Ashley Judd or Mira Sorvino. It’s a complete f—–g lie. If he says it again, I’ll sue him too.”
Weinstein asserted he actively supported Judd and Sorvino’s careers, not sabotaged them, citing his efforts to cast Judd in Good Will Hunting, although other producers ultimately selected a different actress.
“The truth is, I fought on my last breath to cast Ashley Judd in ‘Good Will Hunting.’ I fought like a bastard to get her cast,”
he claimed.
“But Gus and Matt insisted on Minnie Driver, and that was the end of that.”
He added that when Mira Sorvino’s husband needed a part on a TV show, Weinstein replaced another actor with him as a favor.
“And when Mira Sorvino’s husband needed a part in a TV show, I got another actor removed and put him in,”
he stated.
“The truth is, to retaliate against these women I would have needed the cooperation of the agencies.”
Ongoing Responses and Industry Impact
The controversial statements from Weinstein continue to fuel public and industry debate around his past actions and their consequences. While representatives for Paltrow, Jolie, Arquette, Judd, Sorvino, and Jackson declined immediate comment, Weinstein’s remarks underscore ongoing tensions surrounding accountability in Hollywood. This resurgence of controversy contributes to the broader discourse on power dynamics, career influence, and the lasting effects of the #MeToo movement on the film industry.
