He is best known for his long-running television work as Captain Donald Cragen on NBC’s Law & Order and its spinoff Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, as well as for playing Dave Meyer on L.A. Law between 1988 and 1993. Over four decades, Florek has also moved behind the camera, directing numerous episodes of Law & Order and SVU.
Early Life and Background
Ezekial Dann Florek was born on May 1, 1950, in Flat Rock, Michigan, in the United States. He is the son of Leonard Florek, a chiropractor, and Darlene Florek. Raised in Michigan, Florek grew up alongside his brother Dave, who would later also pursue a career as an actor.
He attended Eastern Michigan University, where he majored in math and physics, although he did not complete his degree. Despite his academic path in the sciences, his interests gradually shifted toward performance, and he ultimately decided to pursue acting as a career.
Path to Acting
After deciding to follow a creative path, Florek moved to New York City to pursue acting on the stage. He immersed himself in theater work, building the craft and discipline that would later shape his screen performances. This early commitment to live performance gave him a steady grounding in character work, timing, and collaboration.
His theater experience in New York prepared him for the move to film and television work, and he made the transition into screen acting during the early 1980s. The combination of stage training and screen work became the foundation for the long career that followed.
Dann Florek Career
Early Career (1982–1987)
Florek’s professional career began in 1982, and his earliest notable work came in supporting film roles during the mid-1980s. He appeared in Sweet Liberty (1986), followed by Moon Over Parador (1988) and Angel Heart (1987), establishing himself as a reliable character actor in Hollywood features.
These film appearances gave Florek the visibility needed to secure recurring television work, and he soon moved into a steady role on the NBC drama L.A. Law in 1988, playing Dave Meyer, the husband of Roxanne Melman, appearing in 22 episodes of the series.
Breakthrough (1988–1999)
Florek’s most defining role began in 1990, when he was cast as New York City Police Captain Donald Cragen in the NBC police procedural and legal drama Law & Order. The role made him a familiar face to a wide television audience and remains his most recognized performance.
After the 1992–1993 season, NBC asked creator and executive producer Dick Wolf to add women to the all-male cast of Law & Order. Wolf complied and released Florek along with Richard Brooks, replacing them with S. Epatha Merkerson and Jill Hennessy. Florek was then allowed to step behind the camera, directing a few Law & Order episodes in 1994 and 1995, and he later reprised the Cragen role in the 1995 episode “Bad Faith,” which he also directed, and in the 1998 TV movie Exiled: A Law & Order Movie.
Return to Television (1999–2014)
In 1999, Florek returned to the role of Captain Cragen in the Law & Order spin-off series Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, this time as the commanding officer of the Special Victims Unit. To support the return of the character, Florek and Wolf developed a backstory in which Cragen’s wife, a flight attendant, had been killed in a plane crash, leading him, a recovering alcoholic, back to drinking and toward prostitution, and ultimately driving him to take command of the unit to escape his addiction.
Florek continued in the role of Cragen on SVU for many years. He was written out of the series during its 15th season, with his final episode airing on January 15, 2014. He reprised the role of Cragen in the 21st episode of season 16 in May 2015, and later appeared as Cragen in a video chat with his former detective Olivia Benson, played by Mariska Hargitay, in the 500th episode of SVU.
Notable Works and Milestones
Florek’s film work in the 1990s included the role of Mr. Slate in the live-action film version of The Flintstones (1994), expanding his presence in major studio features. He also had a recurring role on the WB sitcom Smart Guy as the high school gym coach, and appeared in several episodes of the long-running series Roseanne. In April 2022, he reprised the role of Cragen in the SVU spin-off Law & Order: Organized Crime, reuniting the character with former detective Elliot Stabler, played by Christopher Meloni, and he appeared again in the show’s second season finale. At the beginning of Season 27 of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, it is revealed that the Cragen character has died.
