Mariska Magdolna Hargitay was born at Providence Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, California, on January 23, 1964. She is the daughter of celebrated actress Jayne Mansfield, who was married to Hungarian-American bodybuilder and actor Mickey Hargitay at the time of her birth. Hargitay grew up believing Mickey Hargitay was her biological father and only learned in her twenties that her actual biological father was Italian-Brazilian singer Nelson Sardelli.
On June 29, 1967, three-and-a-half-year-old Hargitay survived a major automobile crash on U.S. Route 90 between New Orleans and Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, that killed her mother, Mansfield’s boyfriend Sam Brody, and driver Ronald Harrison.
