Christopher Peter Meloni (born April 2, 1961) is an American actor and producer. He is best known for portraying NYPD Detective Elliot Stabler on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and its spin-off Law & Order: Organized Crime, a role he has played since 1999 with breaks. Over a career spanning theater, television, and film, he has built a reputation for intense performances across drama, comedy, and genre projects.
Meloni first gained widespread recognition in the late 1990s and has since become a familiar face in both network television and feature films. Christopher Peter Meloni was born on April 2, 1961, in Washington, D.C., the youngest of three children. His mother, Cecile Chagnon, was a homemaker, and his father, Charles Robert Meloni, was an endocrinologist. His paternal ancestry is Italian, with one great-grandfather born in Sardinia and another in Velva, near Genoa. His maternal ancestry is French Canadian, and he is a descendant of early American settlers Matthias Farnsworth and Edmund Rice.
Growing up in the Washington, D.C. area, Meloni attended St. Stephen’s School in Alexandria, Virginia, where he played quarterback on the football team. The 1978 team went undefeated, and in 2007 he was inducted into his high school’s athletic Hall of Fame for that season. After graduation, he moved west to continue his education.
He attended the University of Colorado Boulder, where he took acting classes as electives alongside his history coursework. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in history in 1983. After college, Meloni relocated to New York to study acting more seriously, training with Sanford Meisner at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre and at the Center for the Media Arts.

In 2021, an episode of PBS’ Finding Your Roots revealed that he is a distant relative of Nancy Pelosi.
