Diana Nicole DeGarmo (born June 16, 1987) is an American singer and actress who rose to prominence as the runner-up on the third season of American Idol in 2004. Shortly after the finale, she released her debut studio album, Blue Skies, and went on to pursue a parallel career in musical theatre, starring on Broadway and in multiple national tours.

DeGarmo has expanded her career into television and film, including a six-month arc on The Young and the Restless and roles in independent features. In addition to her music, she has supported charitable causes such as the Muscular Dystrophy Association and Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. She currently lives in Nashville, Tennessee, with her husband, singer Ace Young.

Early Life and Background

Diana DeGarmo was born on June 16, 1987, in Birmingham, Alabama, and was raised primarily in the Atlanta suburb of Snellville, Georgia. Growing up in a musically active household, she began singing at a young age and performed at the 1997 Georgia Music Hall of Fame Awards as a child. She also appeared in Atlanta-based stage productions of Annie and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat during her formative years.

At the age of ten, DeGarmo was part of the Cartoon Gang on Cartoon Network, appearing in various on-air bumpers. As a third grader, she served as a Coca-Cola Kid during the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia. Early Career (1996-2004)

DeGarmo began her professional career in 1996 as a Coca-Cola Kid during the Atlanta Summer Olympics, followed by a holiday season singing engagement at Opryland USA in 1997. She continued performing at regional events and in local stage productions throughout her early teens. In 2002, she was named Miss Georgia Teen and appeared as a finalist on the NBC series America’s Most Talented Kids.

Her first major national exposure came in 2004 when she competed on the third season of American Idol. At sixteen years old, she became one of the season’s front-runners by week six and ultimately finished as the runner-up to Fantasia Barrino. She then toured the country with the other top-ten contestants during the summer of 2004 as part of the American Idol summer tour.

Breakthrough (2004-2010)

Signed to RCA Records shortly after the Idol finale, DeGarmo released her debut single, Dreams, on June 29, 2004. The single reached number two in Canada and number fourteen on the Billboard Hot 100, while also including her rendition of I Believe and a remake of Melissa Manchester’s Don’t Cry Out Loud. Her debut album, Blue Skies, arrived on December 7, 2004, selling 47,000 copies in its first week and debuting at number fifty-two on the Billboard 200.

The album featured songs written by future American Idol judge Kara DioGuardi, as well as Desmond Child, Adam Shankman, and Andreas Carlsson. The lead single, Emotional, was released to radio in November 2004 and peaked at number fifty-four on the Mediabase Pop Chart. After parting ways with RCA in June 2005, DeGarmo received the Horizon Award at the Georgia Music Hall of Fame Awards in September 2005, recognizing promising Georgia artists.

DeGarmo transitioned into musical theatre with her major stage debut as Maria in an American Musical Theatre of San Jose production of West Side Story in November 2005. She made her Broadway debut in February 2006 in a four-month run of Hairspray as nerdy Penny Pingleton. She then performed the lead role of Brooklyn in the 2006 national tour of Brooklyn: The Musical alongside Melba Moore, and returned to Hairspray for a second engagement from September 2006 to February 2007.

In April 2007, DeGarmo made her Carnegie Hall debut at a tribute concert for Neil Sedaka. She debuted in the off-Broadway musical The Toxic Avenger in August 2009, playing Sarah, the blind librarian and love interest of Toxie, remaining with the production until it closed on January 3, 2010. During this period, she also self-released the acoustic country EP Unplugged in Nashville in February 2009.

She returned to Broadway in March 2010, starring as Sheila in the Broadway company of Hair, where she met her future husband, Ace Young. DeGarmo continued her stage work in 2010 by starring as Doralee Rhodes in the national tour of 9 to 5, which launched in Nashville on September 21, 2010. In November 2010, she also appeared on composer Scott Alan’s third album, What I Wanna Be When I Grow Up, performing the song I Wish.

DeGarmo’s signature recording remains her 2004 debut album Blue Skies, which has sold 168,000 copies as of fall 2008.
