She spoke at the Ryan White Youth Conference and served on the board of directors of Artists for a New South Africa until around 2013, later joining the board of the Children’s Defense Fund in 2020.
On October 24, 2010, Jurnee Smollett married musician Josiah Bell. Their first and only child, a son named Hunter, was born on October 31, 2016. In March 2020, she filed for divorce, and the divorce was finalized in August 2021.
