His father’s family was part of the Quebec diaspora in Fall River, Massachusetts, while his mother had a Norwegian maternal grandfather and a Finnish maternal grandmother.

Fillion was raised in Edmonton’s Mill Woods neighborhood and completed his secondary education at Holy Trinity Catholic High School. He later attended Concordia University College of Alberta before transferring to the University of Alberta, where he joined the Kappa Alpha Society, although he did not complete his degree. He has been a United States citizen since 1997.

During his youth in Edmonton, Fillion developed an early interest in performance through community theatre. He trained with Rapid Fire Theatre and appeared in the improvised soap opera Die-Nasty, gaining valuable stage experience that would later support his transition to professional screen acting.
