Early Life and Background
Trippie Redd was born and raised in Canton, Ohio, where he grew up on 14th Street. He joined the Bloods at a young age and formed a group called 1400/800, named after the street where he spent his formative years. Redd has a younger brother known by the nickname Hippie Redd and had an older brother who recorded music as Dirty Redd before being killed in a car accident in 2014.
His early musical influences were shaped largely by his mother, who played Ashanti, Beyoncé, Tupac Shakur, and Nas around the house. Redd later gravitated toward artists like T-Pain, Kiss, Nirvana, Gucci Mane, Green Day, the Offspring, Simple Plan, Marilyn Manson, and Lil Wayne, reflecting a wide range of pop, rock, and rap inspirations. Inspired by local Canton rapper Taevion Williams, who performed as Lil Tae, Redd began writing and recording his own songs while still a teenager.
After graduating high school, Redd moved to Atlanta to pursue music more seriously. There he connected with rapper Lil Wop and gained access to a professional recording studio, marking the start of his transition from casual recording to a focused career.
Path to Singer
Working with Lil Wop and singer Kodie Shane, Redd completed three early projects titled Awakening My Inner Beast, Beast Mode, and Rock the World Trippie, which helped him sharpen his songwriting and recording skills. He eventually signed with Strainge Entertainment, the label founded by Elliot Grainge, and relocated to Los Angeles to pursue a wider audience.
On May 26, 2017, Redd released his debut mixtape A Love Letter to You, featuring the lead single Love Scars. The project climbed to number 64 on the Billboard 200 and remained on the chart for 45 weeks, while Love Scars later received double platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of America. The breakout success established Trippie Redd as one of the leading voices of a new wave of emotionally charged rap.
